Synopsis The devil fish which manipulated by Juon-like ghost ''a little girl in red dress'' targets tiger-man's mother. Then, tiger-man tries excising his mother from the devil fish and a little girl in red dress. Parental Guide Downloaded 15, 251 times May 2, 2019 Director Cast Tech specs Movie Reviews Reviewed by 1 / 10 / 10 "KUPA MANDUKA" Ju-On Tempura is Made in KMT I saw it at KMT run Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in this year as a guest. And I still seriously mention a fact that 'A little Girl in Red Dress' (Hong Yi Xiao Nü Hai) was created by Gala Television and the family who shot that V8 home video. Is there any respect for the original creators (copyright holders) of the urbon legend program? Original Creators were disrespected by KMT film production I never saw any original film or TV drama that free from plagiarism and imitations of US, Japan, Hong Kong and France stuff. For example, TV stations require writers to do imitation, and the so called 'indipendent writers' clame themselves are critics of that kind of phenomenon, however they themselves are living in that kind of culture and legacies. For its film content and quality, it's the same with other Taiwan made film stuffs including so called 'Hong Yi Xiao Nü Hai' series that I had to left the cinema within the first 5 minutes. Extremely boring and meaningless. There is no insightful knowledge even about the topic they chose. I think they should solve the copyright issues first with the Gala Television and the family who shot that V8 home video. Then, should do more professional research about Taiwan legendary tales that village people really think about the topic. Mô-sîn-á is not a ghost like Taichung urban people think of, but it is a spiritually invisible shadow of the past especially in the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), it is nether a monster nor a Ju-On-like evil spirit at all. It does not kill anybody, not evil, it just comes to a near mountain village to call children to bring them to the mountain for a few days. It is clear enough that Hong Yi Xiao Nü Hai is a fictional character which created by the Gala Television and the family who shot that V8 home video. Moreover, Mô-sîn-á is not an antagonist of traditional Taiwanese mountain village elders especially who had lived through the Japanese colonial era. KMT can't mix them up. In conclusion, I never saw any insightful social view and class consciousness in both Taiwan films and TV. And you should not forget that we actually already achieved our aim that making well made theatrical feature genre film you KMT bureaucrats hated politically. Freedom of Expression should be respected by the marketing team of this film. Read more IMDb reviews.

It is a prequel to The Tag-Along (2015) and The Tag-Along 2 (2017) which are adapted from the well-known Taiwanese urban legend, "The Little Girl in Red". The film stars Vivian Hsu, Cheng Jen-shuo. It was released on November 23, 2018. Plot [ edit] The movie is based on another famous Taiwanese urban legend, a ghost story that involved three men catching and grilling a fish in central Taiwan only to notice a face appear as they began to eat it. They then heard a voice ask them, in Taiwanese, 「魚肉好吃嗎?」 ("Is the fish meat tasty? "). The story of 人面魚 (fish with a person's face) is a well known folktale in Taiwan. Tales of a fish-like creature with a human face, similar in a way to Japanese yokai, has existed in Taiwan for decades. The film introduces the same folktale of the three men catching the fish and hearing the famous sentence at the start, then the plot then follows the efforts of a group of people, involving a temple priest, a young boy and the boy's mother as they are harassed by malicious spirits brought on by the caught fish. After completing the Tag Along story, the creators of the film wanted to make a movie about another Taiwanese folk tale, choosing the Devil Fish, potentially starting a series in which they could cover more Taiwanese urban legends in the future. The film is also set before the events of 紅衣小女孩2 (The Tag Along 2), including the young son of the Tiger Temple priest and his grandfather who both appear in The Tag Along 2 working at the Tiger Temple, with the son being the boyfriend of a missing girl in the story. Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2019 Verified Purchase Here's the scene where the creators of this movie had before the the title. "Let's make a movie! Great idea! What kind? Horror movie. Let's call it demon dog. Nope. How about Cat from hell? Nope. I know, Devil fish!? What kind of fish? Goldfish? How about Tilapia? OK, let's do it. " I should've given it 1 star, but there are other parts in it that made it interesting. So it's ot that bad, but the plot of a fish being possessed by a demon just didn't sit well with me. I guess I compared it to the many demonology movies I've seen. Added note: Also wanted to add that the captions pr subtitles of this film disappears too quickly to be able to read the complete dialogues, so it is kinda hard to follow. I also noticed this is true to several other movie titles that are in English or other languages that uses captions or subtitles.. Subtitles disappear too quick to make sense of what is the dialogue of the movies. This is more of an Amazon software issue than the movie itself. Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019 Verified Purchase Oh look, a talking fish that isn't mounted on a plaque and hung on a wall. It has smoke coming out of it's rear in. One of the fishermen vomited. Which is the look a-way moment. There wasn't any warning. We didn't appreciate such a gross scene. Oh look, Jackie Chan is performing exorcism. Well, a younger taller Jackie. Burning question with all these movies. When you dispense of a boogy. Why, oh, why do you not chop it up and burn the body? At least bury it in the ground. One doesn't just simply place remains of a boogy ontop of the trash. How stupid do you have to a capital S for watch an exorcism, then turn around and save the demon. Why weren't the guards wearing charms? Wouldn't that be commensense. You have the story between a single dad and his son. A getting divorce mom and her son. Last, but not least, a nasty father who is grossed out by his son. Which I do not understand why they didn't get rid of the boy after birth. I would think with this culture they would have left the baby in the woods to die, or drown it in the river or something. Not keep it around to hate as he is growing up. >>After the first set of credits, there is more movie. After second set of credits, there is still more movie<< Would have been 4 stars but the almost ending sucked. Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2019 Verified Purchase Asian horror is just that-a story about ghosts and demons. American horror movies are usually about serial killers and maximizes the gore around that. I'm surprised that religious conglomerates blame rock 'n roll for crimes and not American horror stories. Asian horror is the best-not another stupid slasher movie listed under the guise of horror. This movie is one not to be missed!! Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2019 Verified Purchase I wish more people were willing to deal with subtitles because this is a great movie based out of Taiwan. I found the series quite suspenseful and couldn't stop myself from watching all three in one night. I personally also feel that while it "same old, same old" type of movie to some it still has a feeling of uniqueness to it that you don't see a lot of in other movies made within the last 5 years in the US. Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019 Verified Purchase I didn't understand the demons in the matching kung-fu outfits that all looked like they came from the same kung-fu school and that made me think that the special effects budget for this movie was far lower than Tag Along 1 and 2, but the final scene was so awesome that it made up for it. Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019 Verified Purchase I love ghost stories let me say that first. So, for me this was a great story. Had all the emotions in it. Drama, suspense, horror, a bit bloody, scary at times. You are holding your breath and routing for the hero. You just get absorbed in wanting to help and praying all will come out ok. Not going to spoil the end but, it will at least touch your heart.. but, before you reach that make sure you keep the lights on. hee hee Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2019 Verified Purchase Hard to find a good quality chinese horror movie these days. This movie has good story line. I love it. Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2019 Verified Purchase Good story and frightening as well.

The performers in this movie are a top-notch tap dancer / singer (Gene Kelley) top-notch ballerina (Leslie Caron) awesome pianist (Oscar Levant) and a great singer (Georges Guétary. They will entertain you. This is a top MGM musical.
A few bits of choreography were unbelievable. Gene Kelley setting up breakfast reminded me of a Jackie Chan kung fu episode and i was laughing on the floor. The introduction for Leslie Caron was very cute. Piano Performances by Oscar Levant were great (although one scene was completely gratuitous.) The Duo between Gene Kelley and Oscar Levant was, for me, the high point of the movie.
The movie sinks, however, when considered as a love story. The love story is unconvincing, and its probably because the female lead - partly because of her role, and partly because of her acting, does not convince the audience to fall in love with her. 4 stars here. Better writing and acting could have made this a "9. much like "Before Sunset.
As a situation comedy it pretty darned funny at times, 6 stars as a comedy. I don't want to give away spoilers but the 4-way love triangle and the resultant situations are worthy of a Lucille Ball episode or better.
The weaknesses of the movie are exposed near the end where there is a low performance to showcase the talent. Apparently the writes and directors realized the story was not going to carry the movie over the top and so they had to do something to compensate for that.
Overall score is 20/30 so i rounded it up to a "7" overall score.

Little Women First volume of Little Women (1868) Author Louisa May Alcott Country United States Language English Series Little Women Genre Coming of age Bildungsroman Publisher Roberts Brothers Publication date 1868 (1st volume) 1869 (2nd volume) Media type Print Pages 759 Followed by Little Men Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the book over several months at the request of her publisher. [1] [2] Following the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy—the novel details their passage from childhood to womanhood and is loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters. [3] [4]: 202 Scholars classify Little Women as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel. [5] [6]: 12 Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, with readers demanding to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume (titled Good Wives in the United Kingdom, although this name originated from the publisher and not from Alcott). It was also successful. The two volumes were issued in 1880 as a single novel titled Little Women. [ citation needed] Alcott wrote two sequels to her popular work, both of which also featured the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Little Women differed notably from contemporary writings for children, especially girls. The novel addressed three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity. " [7]: 200 Little Women "has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth, " but also "as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well. ” [8]: 34 According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from Romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new format. Elbert argued that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the " All-American girl " and that her various aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters. [7]: 199 The book has frequently been adapted for stage and screen. Development history [ edit] In 1868, Thomas Niles, the publisher of Louisa May Alcott, recommended that she write a book about girls that would have widespread appeal. [4]: 2 At first she resisted, preferring to publish a collection of her short stories. Niles pressed her to write the girls' book first, and he was aided by her father Amos Bronson Alcott, who also urged her to do so. [4]: 207 Louisa confided to a friend, “I could not write a girl’s story knowing little about any but my own sisters and always preferring boys”, as quoted in Anne Boyd Rioux's Meg Jo Beth Amy, a condensed biographical account of Alcott's life and writing. In May 1868, Alcott wrote in her journal: "Niles, partner of Roberts, asked me to write a girl's book. I said I'd try. " [9]: 36 Alcott set her novel in an imaginary Orchard House modeled on her own residence of the same name, where she wrote the novel. [4]: xiii She later recalled that she did not think she could write a successful book for girls and did not enjoy writing it. [10]: 335- "I plod away, " she wrote in her diary, "although I don't enjoy this sort of things. " [9]: 37 By June, Alcott had sent the first dozen chapters to Niles, and both agreed these were dull. But Niles' niece Lillie Almy read them and said she enjoyed them. [10]: 335–336 The completed manuscript was shown to several girls, who agreed it was "splendid. ” Alcott wrote, "they are the best critics, so I should definitely be satisfied. " [9]: 37 She wrote Little Women "in record time for money, " [7]: 196x2 but the book's immediate success surprised both her and her publisher. [11] Explanation of the novel's title [ edit] According to literary critic Sarah Elbert, when using the term "little women", Alcott was drawing on its Dickensian meaning; it represented the period in a young woman's life where childhood and elder childhood were "overlapping" with young womanhood. Each of the March sister heroines had a harrowing experience that alerted her and the reader that "childhood innocence" was of the past, and that "the inescapable woman problem" was all that remained. [7] [ page needed] Other views suggest that the title was meant to highlight the unfair social inferiority, especially at that time, of women as compared to men, or, alternatively, describe the lives of simple people, "unimportant" in the social sense. [12] Plot summary [ edit] Part one [ edit] Four teenaged sisters and their mother, whom they call Marmee, live in a new neighborhood (loosely based on Concord) in Massachusetts in genteel poverty. Having lost all his money, their father is acting as a pastor in the American Civil War, far from home. The women face their first Christmas without him. Meg and Jo March, the elder two, have to work in order to support the family: Meg teaches a nearby family of four children; Jo assists her aged great-aunt March, a wealthy widow living in a mansion, Plumfield. Beth, too timid for school, is content to stay at home and help with housework; Amy is still at school. Meg is beautiful and traditional, Jo is a tomboy who writes; Beth is a peacemaker and a pianist; Amy is an artist who longs for elegance and fine society. Jo is impulsive and quick to anger. One of her challenges is trying to control her anger, a challenge that her mother experiences. She advises Jo to speak with forethought before leaving to travel to Washington, where her husband has pneumonia. Their neighbor, Mr. Laurence, who is charmed by Beth, gives her a piano. Beth contracts scarlet fever after spending time with a poor family where three children die. Jo tends Beth in her illness. Beth recovers, but never fully. As a precaution, Amy is sent to live with Aunt March, replacing Jo, while Beth is ill and still infectious. Jo has success earning money with her writing. Meg spends two weeks with friends, where there are parties for the girls to dance with boys and improve their social skills. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, Mr. Laurence's grandson, is invited to one of the dances, as Meg's friends incorrectly think she is in love with him. Meg is more interested in John Brooke, Laurie's young tutor. Brooke goes to Washington to help Mr. March. While with the March parents, Brooke confesses his love for Meg. They are pleased but consider Meg too young to be married. Brooke agrees to wait. He enlists and serves a year or so in the war. After he is wounded, he returns to find work so he can buy a house ready for when he marries Meg. Laurie goes off to college. On Christmas Day, a year after the book's opening, the girls' father returns from the war. Part two [ edit] (Published separately in the United Kingdom as Good Wives) Three years later, Meg and John marry and learn how to live together. When they have twins, Meg is a devoted mother but John begins to feel left out. Laurie graduates from college, having put in effort to do well in his last year with Jo's prompting. Amy goes on a European tour with her aunt. Beth's health is weak and her spirits are down. When trying to uncover the reason for Beth's sadness, Jo realizes that Laurie has fallen in love. At first she believes it's with Beth but soon senses it's with herself. Jo confides in Marmee, telling her that she loves Laurie but she loves him like a brother and that she could not love him in the romantic way. Jo decides she wants a bit of adventure and to put distance between herself and Laurie, hoping he will forget his feelings. She spends six months with a friend of her mother in New York City, serving as governess for her two children. The family runs a boarding house. She takes German lessons with Professor Bhaer, who lives in the house. He has come to America from Berlin to care for the orphaned sons of his sister. For extra money, Jo writes stories without a moral, which disappoints Bhaer. He persuades her to give up poorly written sensational stories as her time in New York comes to an end. When she returns, Laurie proposes marriage and she declines. Laurie travels to Europe with his grandfather to escape his heartbreak. At home, Beth's health has seriously deteriorated. Jo devotes her time to the care of her dying sister. Laurie encounters Amy in Europe, and he slowly falls in love with her as he begins to see her in a new light. She is unimpressed by the aimless, idle and forlorn attitude he has adopted since being rejected by Jo, and inspires him to find his purpose and do something worthwhile with his life. With the news of Beth's death, they meet for consolation and their romance grows. Amy's aunt will not allow Amy to return with just Laurie and his grandfather, so they marry before returning home from Europe. Professor Bhaer goes to the Marches' and stays for two weeks. On his last day, he proposes to Jo. Jo accepts. When Aunt March dies, she leaves Plumfield to Jo. Jo and Bhaer turn the house into a school for boys. They have two sons of their own, and Amy and Laurie have a daughter. At apple-picking time, Marmee celebrates her 60th birthday at Plumfield, with her husband, her three surviving daughters, their husbands, and her five grandchildren. Characters [ edit] Margaret "Meg" March [ edit] Meg, the eldest sister, is 16 when the story starts. She is referred to as a beauty and manages the household when her mother is absent. She is brown-haired and blue-eyed and has particularly beautiful hands. Meg fulfills expectations for women of the time; from the start, she is already a nearly perfect "little woman" in the eyes of the world. [13] Before her marriage to John Brooke, while still living at home, she often lectures her younger sisters to ensure they grow to embody the title of "little women". [14] Meg is employed as a governess for the Kings, a wealthy local family. Because of their father's family's social standing, Meg makes her debut into high society, but is lectured by her friend and neighbor, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, for behaving like a snob. Meg marries John Brooke, Laurie's tutor. They have twins, Margaret "Daisy" Brooke and John "Demi" Brooke. The sequel, Little Men, mentions a baby daughter, Josephine "Josy" Brooke, [15] who is 14 at the beginning of the final book. [16] Critics have portrayed Meg as lacking in independence, reliant entirely on her husband, and "isolated in her little cottage with two small children". [7]: 204 From this perspective, Meg is seen as the compliant daughter who does not "attain Alcott's ideal womanhood" of equality. According to Sarah Elbert, "democratic domesticity requires maturity, strength, and above all a secure identity that Meg lacks". [7]: 204 Others believe that Alcott does not intend to belittle Meg for her ordinary life, and portrays her in loving detail, suffused in a sentimental light. [17] Josephine "Jo" March [ edit] The principal character, Jo, 15 years old at the beginning of the book, is a strong and willful young woman, struggling to subdue her fiery temper and stubborn personality. [18] [19] The second oldest of four sisters, Josephine March is the boyish one; her father has referred to her as his "son Jo, " and her best friend and neighbor, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, sometimes calls her "my dear fellow, " while she alone calls him Teddy. Jo has a "hot" temper that often leads her into trouble. With the help of her own misguided sense of humor, her sister Beth, and her mother, she works on controlling it. It has been said that much of Louisa May Alcott shows through in these characteristics of Jo. [20] Jo loves literature, both reading and writing. She composes plays for her sisters to perform and writes short stories. She initially rejects the idea of marriage and romance, feeling that it would break up her family and separate her from the sisters whom she adores. While pursuing a literary career in New York City, she meets Friedrich Bhaer, a German professor. On her return home, Jo rejects Laurie's marriage proposal, confirming her independence. After Beth dies, Professor Bhaer woos Jo at her home, when "They decide to share life's burdens just as they shared the load of bundles on their shopping expedition. " [7]: 210 She is 25 years old when she accepts his proposal. The marriage is deferred until her unexpected inheritance of her Aunt March's home a year later. According to critic Barbara Sicherman, "The crucial first point is that the choice is hers, its quirkiness another sign of her much-prized individuality. " [8]: 21 They have two sons, Robin "Rob" Bhaer and Theodore "Teddy" Bhaer. Jo also writes the first part of Little Women during the second portion of the novel. According to Elbert, "her narration signals a successfully completed adolescence". [7]: 199 Jo is speculated by some to be aromantic, telling Laurie that she will not marry and later expressing that she will not love any man in the way she is expected to by her friends and family. Alcott expressed frustration that so many fans wanted to see Jo wed but ultimately married her off to Bhaer (with Jo reluctantly chasing after him) as, during this time period, women were expected to marry and the book would not have sold well otherwise (as shown in the 2019 movie adaptation with the book only being published once Jo was married). In the 2019 movie adaptation Greta Gerwig makes it clear that Jo was not intended to marry. Elizabeth "Beth" March [ edit] Beth, 13 when the story starts, is described as kind, gentle, sweet, shy, quiet and musical. She is the shyest March sister. [21]: 53 Infused with quiet wisdom, she is the peacemaker of the family and gently scolds her sisters when they argue. [22] As her sisters grow up, they begin to leave home, but Beth has no desire to leave her house or family. She is especially close to Jo: when Beth develops scarlet fever after visiting the Hummels, Jo does most of the nursing and rarely leaves her side. Beth recovers from the acute disease but her health is permanently weakened. As she grows, Beth begins to realize that her time with her loved ones is coming to an end. Finally, the family accepts that Beth will not live much longer. They make a special room for her, filled with all the things she loves best: her kittens, her piano, Father's books, Amy's sketches, and her beloved dolls. She is never idle; she knits and sews things for the children who pass by on their way to and from school. But eventually she puts down her sewing needle, saying it grew "heavy. " Beth's final sickness has a strong effect on her sisters, especially Jo, who resolves to live her life with more consideration and care for everyone. The main loss during Little Women is the death of beloved Beth. Her "self-sacrifice" is ultimately the greatest in the novel. She gives up her life knowing that it has had only private, domestic meaning. " [7]: 206–207 Amy Curtis March [ edit] Amy is the youngest sister and baby of the family, aged 12 when the story begins. Interested in art, she is described as a "regular snow-maiden" with curly golden hair and blue eyes, "pale and slender" and "always carrying herself" like a proper young lady. She is the artist of the family. [23] Often coddled because she is the youngest, Amy can behave in a vain and self-centered way. [24]: 5 She has the middle name Curtis, and is the only March sister to use her full name rather than a diminutive. [25] She is chosen by her aunt to travel in Europe with her, where she grows and makes a decision about the level of her artistic talent and how to direct her adult life. She encounters "Laurie" Laurence and his grandfather during the extended visit. Amy is the least inclined of the sisters to sacrifice and self-denial. She behaves well in good society, at ease with herself. Critic Martha Saxton observes the author was never fully at ease with Amy's moral development and her success in life seemed relatively accidental. [24] However, Amy's morality does appear to develop throughout her adolescence and early adulthood, and she is able to confidently and justly put Laurie in his place when she believes he is wasting his life on pleasurable activities. Ultimately, Amy is shown to work very hard to gain what she wants in life, and to make the most of her success while she has it. Due to her early selfishness (when her friends knew she would not share any pickled lime) and attachment to material things, Amy has been described as the least likable of the four sisters, but she is also the only one who strives to excel at art purely for self-expression, in contrast to Jo, who sometimes writes for financial gain. [26] Additional characters [ edit] Margaret "Marmee" March – The girls' mother and head of household while her husband is away. She engages in charitable works and lovingly guides her girls' morals and their characters. She once confesses to Jo that her temper is as volatile as Jo's, but that she has learned to control it. [27]: 130 Somewhat modeled after the author's own mother, she is the focus around which the girls' lives unfold as they grow. [27]: 2 Robert March – Formerly wealthy, the father is portrayed as having helped a friend who could not repay a debt, resulting in his family's genteel poverty. A scholar and a minister, he serves as a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War and is wounded in December 1862. After the war he becomes minister to a small congregation. Professor Friedrich Bhaer – A middle-aged, "philosophically inclined", and penniless German immigrant in New York City who had been a noted professor in Berlin. Also known as Fritz, he initially lives in Mrs. Kirke's boarding house and works as a language master. [21]: 61 He and Jo become friends, and he critiques her writing. He encourages her to become a serious writer instead of writing sensational stories for weekly tabloids. "Bhaer has all the qualities Bronson Alcott lacked: warmth, intimacy, and a tender capacity for expressing his affection—the feminine attributes Alcott admired and hoped men could acquire in a rational, feminist world. " [7]: 210 They eventually marry and raise his two orphaned nephews, Franz and Emil, and their own sons, Rob and Teddy. [28] Robin and Theodore Bhaer ("Rob" and "Teddy") – Jo's and Fritz's sons, introduced in the final pages of the novel, named after the March girls' father and Laurie. John Brooke – During his employment as a tutor to Laurie, he falls in love with Meg. He accompanies Mrs. March to Washington D. C. when her husband is ill with pneumonia. When Laurie leaves for college, Brooke continues his employment with Mr. Laurence as a bookkeeper. When Aunt March overhears Meg rejecting John's declaration of love, she threatens Meg with disinheritance because she suspects that Brooke is only interested in Meg's future prospects. Eventually, Meg admits her feelings to Brooke, they defy Aunt March (who ends up accepting the marriage), and they are engaged. Brooke serves in the Union Army for a year and is sent home as an invalid when he is wounded. Brooke marries Meg a few years later when the war has ended and she has turned twenty. Brooke was modeled after John Bridge Pratt, her sister Anna's husband. [29] Margaret and John Laurence Brooke ("Daisy" and "Demijohn/Demi") – Meg's twin son and daughter. Daisy is named after both Meg and Marmee, while Demi is named for John and the Laurence family. Josephine Brooke ("Josy" or "Josie") – Meg's youngest child, named after Jo. She develops a passion for acting as she grows up. Uncle and Aunt Carrol – Sister and brother-in-law of Mr. They take Amy to Europe with them, where Uncle Carrol frequently tries to be like an English gentleman. Florence "Flo" Carrol – Amy's cousin, daughter of Aunt and Uncle Carrol, and companion in Europe. May and Mrs. Chester – A well-to-do family with whom the Marches are acquainted. May Chester is a girl about Amy's age, who is rich and jealous of Amy's popularity and talent. Miss Crocker – An old and poor spinster who likes to gossip and who has few friends. Mr. Dashwood – Publisher and editor of the Weekly Volcano. Mr. Davis – The schoolteacher at Amy's school. He punishes Amy for bringing pickled limes to school by striking her palm and making her stand on a platform in front of the class. She is withdrawn from the school by her mother. Estelle "Esther" Valnor – A French woman employed as a servant for Aunt March who befriends Amy. The Gardiners – Wealthy friends of Meg's. Daughter Sallie Gardiner later marries Ned Moffat. The Hummels – A poor German family consisting of a widowed mother and six children. Marmee and the girls help them by bringing food, firewood, blankets, and other comforts. They help with minor repairs to their small dwelling. Three of the children die of scarlet fever and Beth contracts the disease while caring for them. The eldest daughter, Lottchen "Lotty" Hummel, later works as a matron at Jo's school at Plumfield The Kings – A wealthy family with four children for whom Meg works as a governess. The Kirkes – Mrs. Kirke is a friend of Mrs. March's who runs a boarding house in New York. She employs Jo as governess to her two daughters, Kitty and Minnie. The Lambs – A well-off family with whom the Marches are acquainted. James Laurence – Laurie's grandfather and a wealthy neighbor of the Marches. Lonely in his mansion, and often at odds with his high-spirited grandson, he finds comfort in becoming a benefactor to the Marches. He protects the March sisters while their parents are away. He was a friend to Mrs. March's father, and admires their charitable works. He develops a special, tender friendship with Beth, who reminds him of his late granddaughter. He gives Beth the girl's piano. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence – A rich young man who lives opposite the Marches, older than Jo but younger than Meg. Laurie is the "boy next door" to the March family and has an overprotective paternal grandfather, Mr. Laurence. After eloping with an Italian pianist, Laurie's father was disowned by his parents. Both Laurie's mother and father died young, so as a boy Laurie was taken in by his grandfather. Preparing to enter Harvard, Laurie is being tutored by John Brooke. He is described as attractive and charming, with black eyes, brown skin, and curly black hair. He later falls in love with Amy and they marry; they have one child, a little girl named after Beth: Elizabeth "Bess" Laurence. Sometimes Jo calls Laurie "Teddy". Though Alcott did not make Laurie as multidimensional as the female characters, she partly based him on Ladislas Wisniewski, a young Polish émigré she had befriended, and Alf Whitman, a friend from Lawrence, Kansas. [4]: 202 [6]: 241 [24]: 287 According to author and professor Jan Susina, the portrayal of Laurie is as "the fortunate outsider", observing Mrs. March and the March sisters. He agrees with Alcott that Laurie is not strongly developed as a character. [30] Elizabeth Laurence ("Bess") – The only daughter of Laurie and Amy, named for Beth. Like her mother, she develops a love for art as she grows up. Aunt Josephine March – Mr. March's aunt, a rich widow. Somewhat temperamental and prone to being judgmental, she disapproves of the family's poverty, their charitable work, and their general disregard for the more superficial aspects of society's ways. Her vociferous disapproval of Meg's impending engagement to the impoverished Mr. Brooke becomes the proverbial "last straw" that actually causes Meg to accept his proposal. She appears to be strict and cold, but deep down, she's really quite soft-hearted. She dies near the end of the first book, and Jo and Friedrich turn her estate into a school for boys. Annie Moffat – A fashionable and wealthy friend of Meg and Sallie Gardiner. Ned Moffat – Annie Moffat's brother, who marries Sallie Gardiner. Hannah Mullet – The March family maid and cook, their only servant. She is of Irish descent and very dear to the family. She is treated more like a member of the family than a servant. Miss Norton – A friendly, well-to-do tenant living in Mrs. Kirke's boarding house. She occasionally invites Jo to accompany her to lectures and concerts. Susie Perkins – A girl at Amy's school. The Scotts – Friends of Meg and John Brooke. John knows Mr. Scott from work. Tina – The young daughter of an employee of Mrs. Kirke. Tina loves Mr. Bhaer and treats him like a father. The Vaughans – English friends of Laurie's who come to visit him. Kate is the oldest of the Vaughan siblings, and prim and proper Grace is the youngest. The middle siblings, Fred and Frank, are twins; Frank is the younger twin. Fred Vaughan – A Harvard friend of Laurie's who, in Europe, courts Amy. Rivalry with the much richer Fred for Amy's love inspires the dissipated Laurie to pull himself together and become more worthy of her. Amy will eventually reject Fred, knowing she does not love him and deciding not to marry out of ambition. [31] Frank Vaughan – Fred's twin brother, mentioned a few times in the novel. When Fred and Amy are both traveling in Europe, Fred leaves because he hears his twin is ill. Inspiration [ edit] The attic at Fruitlands where Alcott lived and acted out plays at 11 years old. Note that the ceiling area is around 4 feet high For her books, Alcott was often inspired by familiar elements. The characters in Little Women are recognizably drawn from family members and friends. [3] [4]: 202 Her married sister Anna was Meg, the family beauty. Lizzie, Alcott's beloved sister who died at the age of twenty-three, was the model for Beth, and May, Alcott's strong-willed sister, was portrayed as Amy, whose pretentious affectations cause her occasional downfalls. [4]: 202 Alcott portrayed herself as Jo. Alcott readily corresponded with readers who addressed her as "Miss March" or "Jo", and she did not correct them. [32] [33]: 31 However, Alcott's portrayal, even if inspired by her family, is an idealized one. For instance, Mr. March is portrayed as a hero of the American Civil War, a gainfully employed chaplain, and, presumably, a source of inspiration to the women of the family. He is absent for most of the novel. [33]: 51 In contrast, Bronson Alcott was very present in his family's household, due in part to his inability to find steady work. While he espoused many of the educational principles touted by the March family, he was loud and dictatorial. His lack of financial independence was a source of humiliation to his wife and daughters. [33]: 51 The March family is portrayed living in genteel penury, but the Alcott family, dependent on an improvident, impractical father, suffered real poverty and occasional hunger. [34] In addition to her own childhood and that of her sisters, scholars who have examined the diaries of Louisa Alcott's mother, Abigail Alcott, have surmised that Little Women was also heavily inspired by Abigail Alcott's own early life. [27]: 6 Publication history [ edit] The first volume of Little Women was published in 1868 by Roberts Brothers. [35] The first printing of 2, 000 copies sold out quickly, and the company had trouble keeping up with demand for additional printings. They announced: "The great literary hit of the season is undoubtedly Miss Alcott's Little Women, the orders for which continue to flow in upon us to such an extent as to make it impossible to answer them with promptness. " [9]: 37 The last line of Chapter 23 in the first volume is "So the curtain falls upon Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Whether it ever rises again, depends upon the reception given the first act of the domestic drama called Little Women. " [36] Alcott delivered the manuscript for the second volume on New Year's Day 1869, just three months after publication of part one. [10]: 345 Versions in the late 20th and 21st centuries combine both portions into one book, under the title Little Women, with the later-written portion marked as Part 2, as this Bantam Classic paperback edition, initially published in 1983 typifies. [37] There are 23 chapters in Part 1 and 47 chapters in the complete book. Each chapter is numbered and has a title as well. Part 2, Chapter 24 opens with "In order that we may start afresh and go to Meg's wedding with free minds, it will be well to begin with a little gossip about the Marches. " [36] Editions published in the 21st century may be the original text unaltered, the original text with illustrations, the original text annotated for the reader (explaining terms of 1868–69 that are less common now), the original text modernized and abridged, or the original text abridged. [38] The British influence, giving Part 2 its own title, Good Wives, has the book still published in two volumes, with Good Wives beginning three years after Little Women ends, especially in the UK and Canada, but also with some US editions. Some editions listed under Little Women appear to include both parts, especially in the audio book versions. [38] Editions are shown in continuous print from many publishers, as hardback, paperback, audio, and e-book versions, from the 1980s to 2015. [38] [39] This split of the two volumes also shows at Goodreads, which refers to the books as the Little Women series, including Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men and Jo's Boys. [40] Reception [ edit] G. K. Chesterton notes that in Little Women, Alcott "anticipated realism by twenty or thirty years", and that Fritz's proposal to Jo, and her acceptance, "is one of the really human things in human literature. " [41] Gregory S. Jackson said that Alcott's use of realism belongs to the American Protestant pedagogical tradition, which includes a range of religious literary traditions with which Alcott was familiar. He has copies in his book of nineteenth-century images of devotional children's guides which provide background for the game of "pilgrims progress" that Alcott uses in her plot of Book One. [42] Little Women was well received upon first publication. According to 21st-century critic Barbara Sicherman there was, during the 19th century, a "scarcity of models for nontraditional womanhood", which led more women to look toward "literature for self-authorization. This is especially true during adolescence. " [8]: 2 Little Women became "the paradigmatic text for young women of the era and one in which family literary culture is prominently featured. " [8]: 3 Adult elements of women's fiction in Little Women included "a change of heart necessary" for the female protagonist to evolve in the story. [7]: 199 In the late 20th century some scholars criticized the novel. Sarah Elbert, for instance, wrote that Little Women was the beginning of "a decline in the radical power of women's fiction", partly because women's fiction was being idealized with a "hearth and home" children's story. [7]: 197 Women's literature historians and juvenile fiction historians have agreed that Little Women was the beginning of this "downward spiral". But Elbert says that Little Women did not "belittle women's fiction" and that Alcott stayed true to her "Romantic birthright". [7]: 198–199 Little Women' s popular audience was responsive to ideas of social change as they were shown "within the familiar construct of domesticity". [7]: 220 While Alcott had been commissioned to "write a story for girls", her primary heroine, Jo March, became a favorite of many different women, including educated women writers through the 20th century. The girl story became a "new publishing category with a domestic focus that paralleled boys' adventure stories". [8]: 3–4 One reason the novel was so popular was that it appealed to different classes of women along with those of different national backgrounds, at a time of high immigration to the United States. Through the March sisters, women could relate and dream where they may not have before. [8]: 3–4 "Both the passion Little Women has engendered in diverse readers and its ability to survive its era and transcend its genre point to a text of unusual permeability. " [8]: 35 At the time, young girls perceived that marriage was their end goal. After the publication of the first volume, many girls wrote to Alcott asking her "who the little women marry". [8]: 21 The unresolved ending added to the popularity of Little Women. Sicherman said that the unsatisfying ending worked to "keep the story alive" as if the reader might find it ended differently upon different readings. [8]: 21 "Alcott particularly battled the conventional marriage plot in writing Little Women. " [43] Alcott did not have Jo accept Laurie's hand in marriage; rather, when she arranged for Jo to marry, she portrayed an unconventional man as her husband. Alcott used Friedrich to "subvert adolescent romantic ideals" because he was much older and seemingly unsuited for Jo. [8]: 21 (Jo is speculated by some to be aromantic, telling Laurie that she will not marry and later expressing that she will not love any man in the way she is expected to by her friends and family. In the 2019 movie adaptation Greta Gerwig makes it clear that Jo was not intended to marry. Other common speculations include that Jo is: - Lesbian - Transgender) () In 2003 Little Women was ranked number 18 in The Big Read, a survey of the British public by the BBC to determine the "Nation's Best-loved Novel" (not children's novel); it is fourth-highest among novels published in the U. S. on that list. [44] Based on a 2007 online poll, the U. National Education Association named it one of "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". [45] In 2012 it was ranked number 48 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a monthly with primarily US audience. [46] Influence [ edit] Little Women has been one of the most widely read novels, noted by Stern from a 1927 report in the New York Times and cited in Little Women and the Feminist Imagination: Criticism, Controversy, Personal Essays. [47] Ruth MacDonald argued that "Louisa May Alcott stands as one of the great American practitioners of the girls' novel and the family story. " [48] In the 1860s, gendered separation of children's fiction was a newer division in literature. This division signaled a beginning of polarization of gender roles as social constructs "as class stratification increased". [8]: 18 Joy Kasson wrote, "Alcott chronicled the coming of age of young girls, their struggles with issues such as selfishness and generosity, the nature of individual integrity, and, above all, the question of their place in the world around them. " [49] Girls related to the March sisters in Little Women, along with following the lead of their heroines, by assimilating aspects of the story into their own lives. [8]: 22 After reading Little Women, some women felt the need to "acquire new and more public identities", however dependent on other factors such as financial resources. [8]: 55 While Little Women showed regular lives of American middle-class girls, it also "legitimized" their dreams to do something different and allowed them to consider the possibilities. [8]: 36 More young women started writing stories that had adventurous plots and "stories of individual achievement—traditionally coded male—challenged women's socialization into domesticity. " [8]: 55 Little Women also influenced contemporary European immigrants to the United States who wanted to assimilate into middle-class culture. In the pages of Little Women, young and adolescent girls read the normalization of ambitious women. This provided an alternative to the previously normalized gender roles. [8]: 35 Little Women repeatedly reinforced the importance of "individuality" and "female vocation". [8]: 26 Little Women had "continued relevance of its subject" and "its longevity points as well to surprising continuities in gender norms from the 1860s at least through the 1960s. " [8]: 35 Those interested in domestic reform could look to the pages of Little Women to see how a "democratic household" would operate. [7]: 276 While "Alcott never questioned the value of domesticity", she challenged the social constructs that made spinsters obscure and fringe members of society solely because they were not married. [7]: 193 " Little Women indisputably enlarges the myth of American womanhood by insisting that the home and the women's sphere cherish individuality and thus produce young adults who can make their way in the world while preserving a critical distance from its social arrangements. " As with all youth, the March girls had to grow up. These sisters, and in particular Jo, were apprehensive about adulthood because they were afraid that, by conforming to what society wanted, they would lose their special individuality. [7]: 199 Alcott's Jo also made professional writing imaginable for generations of women. Writers as diverse as Maxine Hong Kingston, Margaret Atwood, and J. Rowling have noted the influence of Jo March on their artistic development. Even other fictional portraits of young women aspiring to authorship often reference Jo March. [50] Alcott "made women's rights integral to her stories, and above all to Little Women. " [7]: 193 Alcott's fiction became her "most important feminist contribution"—even considering all the effort Alcott made to help facilitate women's rights. " [7]: 193 She thought that "a democratic household could evolve into a feminist society". In Little Women, she imagined that just such an evolution might begin with Plumfield, a nineteenth century feminist utopia. [7]: 194 Little Women has a timeless resonance which reflects Alcott's grasp of her historical framework in the 1860s. The novel's ideas do not intrude themselves upon the reader because the author is wholly in control of the implications of her imaginative structure. Sexual equality is the salvation of marriage and the family; democratic relationships make happy endings. This is the unifying imaginative frame of Little Women. [7]: 276 Adaptations [ edit] Stage [ edit] Scene from the 1912 Broadway production of Little Women, adapted by Marian de Forest Katharine Cornell became a star in the 1919 London production of de Forest's adaptation of Little Women Marian de Forest adapted Little Women for the Broadway stage in 1912. [51] The 1919 London production made a star of Katharine Cornell, who played the role of Jo. [52] A one-act stage version, written by Gerald P. Murphy in 2009, [53] has been produced in the US, UK, Italy, Australia, Ireland, and Singapore. [ citation needed] Myriad Theatre & Film adapted the novel as a full-length play which was staged in London and Essex in 2011. [54] Marisha Chamberlain [55] [56] and June Lowery [57] have both adapted the novel as a full-length play; the latter play was staged in Luxembourg in 2014. Isabella Russell-Ides created two stage adaptations. Her Little Women featured an appearance by author, Louisa May Alcott. Jo & Louisa features a rousing confrontation between the unhappy character, Jo March, who wants rewrites from her author. [58] [59] A new adaptation by award-winning playwright Kate Hamill had its world premiere in 2018 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis, followed by a New York premiere in 2019 at Primary Stages directed by Sarna Lapine. [60] Film [ edit] Little Women has been adapted to film seven times. The first adaptation was a silent film directed by Alexander Butler and released in 1917, which starred Daisy Burrell as Amy, Mary Lincoln as Meg, Ruby Miller as Jo, and Muriel Myers as Beth. It is considered a lost film. Another silent film adaptation was released in 1918 and directed by Harley Knoles. It starred Isabel Lamon as Meg, Dorothy Bernard as Jo, Lillian Hall as Beth, and Florence Flinn as Amy. George Cukor directed the first sound adaptation of Little Women, starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo, Joan Bennett as Amy, Frances Dee as Meg, and Jean Parker as Beth. The film was released in 1933 and followed by an adaptation of Little Men the year after. The first color adaptation starred June Allyson as Jo, Margaret O'Brien as Beth, Elizabeth Taylor as Amy, and Janet Leigh as Meg. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, it was released in 1949. Gillian Armstrong directed a 1994 adaptation, which starred Winona Ryder as Jo, Trini Alvarado as Meg, Samantha Mathis and Kirsten Dunst as Amy, and Claire Danes as Beth. [61] The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Ryder. A contemporary film adaptation [62] was released in 2018 to mark the 150th anniversary of the novel. [63] It was directed by Clare Niederpruem in her directorial debut and starred Sarah Davenport as Jo, Allie Jennings as Beth, Melanie Stone as Meg, and Elise Jones and Taylor Murphy as Amy. [63] A 2019 adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig starred Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Emma Watson as Meg, Florence Pugh as Amy, and Eliza Scanlen as Beth. [64] Television [ edit] Little Women was adapted into a television musical, in 1958, by composer Richard Adler for CBS. [65] Little Women has been made into a serial four times by the BBC: in 1950 (when it was shown live), in 1958, in 1970, [66] and in 2017. [67] The 3-episode 2017 series development was supported by PBS, and was aired as part of the PBS Masterpiece anthology in 2018. Universal Television produced a two-part miniseries based on the novel, which aired on NBC in 1978. It was followed by a 1979 series. In the 1980s, two anime series were made in Japan, Little Women in 1981 and Tales of Little Women in 1987. Both anime series were dubbed in English and shown on American television. In 2012, Lifetime aired The March Sisters at Christmas (directed by John Simpson), a contemporary television film focusing on the title characters' efforts to save their family home from being sold. [68] It is usually rebroadcast on the channel each holiday season. [69] A 2018 adaption is that of Manor Rama Pictures LLP of Karan Raj Kohli & Viraj Kapur which streams on the ALTBalaji app in India. The web series is called Haq Se. Set in Kashmir, the series is a modern-day Indian adaptation of the book. Musicals and opera [ edit] The novel was adapted to a musical of the same name and debuted on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre on January 23, 2005 and closed on May 22, 2005 after 137 performances. A production was also staged in Sydney, Australia in 2008. [70] The Houston Grand Opera commissioned and performed Little Women in 1998. The opera was aired on television by PBS in 2001 and has been staged by other opera companies since the premiere. [71] There is a Canadian musical version, with book by Nancy Early and music and lyrics by Jim Betts, which has been produced at several regional theatres in Canada. There was another musical version, entitled "Jo", with music by William Dyer and book and lyrics by Don Parks & William Dyer, which was produced off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. It ran for 63 performances from February 12, 1964, to April 5, 1964. It featured Karin Wolfe (Jo), Susan Browning (Meg), Judith McCauley (Beth), April Shawhan (Amy), Don Stewart (Laurie), Joy Hodges (Marmee), Lowell Harris (John Brooke) and Mimi Randolph (Aunt March). Audio drama [ edit] A radio play starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo was made to accompany the 1933 film. Grand Audiobooks hold the current copyright. A dramatized version, produced by Focus on the Family Radio Theatre, [72] was released on September 4, 2012. When was His Little Women created. Little women dallas. I just sat with my mom in a theater full of women and we all smiled, laughed, and boo-hooed through the whole movie. They take the classic story and tell it in a new and unexpected (and delightful) way. This captured what so many versions fail to capture which is the CHARM of the March sisters and Marmee and Laurie and Mr. Lawrence and all the characters we know and love! When I saw the trailer I wasn't sure it would really capture it, and I wasn't immediately thrilled by the choices of cast, but the movie was a joy to sit through and the cast was perfect!
READ THE BOOK (I must insist) and then go check out this movie with your best pals. Little women audiobook. Were excited to see this movie because of the cast, Saoirse, Timmy, Laura, Meryl, Emma. but after watching the movie ended up falling for the actress of Amy! I Liked her the most.

I went into Little Women not having read the novel or having seen any of the adaptations. It's the best movie I've seen this year. Everything is superlative: Ronan's performance, Deslpat's score, Le Saux's cinematography, Gonchor's production design, and of course Gerwig's writing and direction.
There are multiple times where this film looks like a painting. The scenes at the beach in particular are stunning, with one shot of Beth and Jo with sand swirling around them being my favorite of the film.
I really hope this film isn't overlooked at the Academy Awards like it was at the Golden Globes. Gerwig absolutely deserves a best director nomination and I'd give her and the film the win. It's that good.

I had never heard about the little women story or book. Not something I have ever known in the Netherlands. Nice that most countries love it and find it a “big thing” For me I REALLY enjoyed the movie “just” as a movie because I dont have any other emotions or recognition around it. I like Saorise Ronan and want to like this movie but it seems it's dumped all the good-looking young actors in the cast without regard to dynamics.

Away. My. Daddy is. Gon😭😭😭. I don't know what everyone else on this site saw but it must have been a different movie. I am a huge fan of the 1994 Little Women. I did what I could to scrub my mind of the past movie to try and experience this movie with fresh eyes. This movie had more jump cuts than an action movie, in this context I mean with all the flashbacks from the past to present. It was all over the place and in no chronological order so anyone could make sense of. If I hadn't watched the previous film I would have absolutely no idea what is going on. These jump cuts also are a disservice to the pacing and emotions needing to be conveyed in this film. You couldn't get attached to any of the characters. It's a brilliant cast, and excellent cinematography but I feel its all wasted on the structure of this film.

Beth was so underrated both in the movies and book 😩 Out of all the sisters, i relate to her the most because im also the type of person who is quiet, shy and the one who takes care of others first before themselves. He is so incredibly immature in the books compared to Fritz.

See more awards  » Edit Storyline Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood movie star who was hailed as the most beautiful and glamorous in the world. However, that was only the surface that tragically obscured her astounding true talents. Foremost of them was her inventive genius that a world blinded by her beauty could not recognize as far back as her youth in Austria with her homemade gadgets. This film explores Lamarr's life which included escaping a loveless marriage on the eve of Nazi Germany's conquest of her nation to a new career in Hollywood. However, her intellectual contributions were denied their due even when she offered them in the service of her new home during World War II. Only after years of career and personal decline in her troubled life would Lamarr learn that her staggering aptitude created brilliant engineering concepts that revolutionized telecommunications, which forced the world to realize the hidden abilities of a woman it had so unfairly underestimated. The biopic was to be an adaptation of the 2012 biography Hedy's Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, The Most Beautiful Woman in the World by Richard Rhodes. The film stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie, and is based upon the accounts of several women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. Actors John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Malcolm McDowell, and Allison Janney appear in supporting roles. The project was first announced in May 2017 following Ailes's death, with Roach confirmed as director the following year. Much of the cast joined that summer and filming began in October 2018 in Los Angeles. It entered into a limited release in the United States on December 13, 2019, before a wide release on December 20, by Lionsgate. Bombshell received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising the performances of the cast (particularly of Theron, Kidman, Robbie, and Lithgow) and the makeup and hairstyling but some criticizing its screenplay and inaccuracies. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it earned three nominations: Best Actress (Theron) Best Supporting Actress (Robbie) and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The film also received two nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards (for Theron and Robbie) four at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards (Theron, Robbie, and Kidman, as well as Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture) and three at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards (Theron, Robbie, and Best Makeup and Hair. Plot [ edit] Roger Ailes heads Fox News, the dominant conservative television network. The film focuses on newscasters Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson and composite character Kayla Pospisil. Kelly is one of the most popular and is to co-moderate the 2016 Republican debate. The day of the debate, sick and throwing up, she nevertheless questions Donald Trump on comments he has made about women. In retaliation, he tweets insults about her, and others follow suit. One paparazzo stalks Kelly's family outside her home to photograph her children, prompting Kelly's husband, Douglas, to kick the intruder out. Fox then hires a security detail for Kelly. Ailes fears someone poisoned her the day of the debate. Carlson is removed as co-anchor of the popular Fox and Friends and is transferred to a less popular show. Inundated by sexist comments on and off the air, she meets with lawyers who tell her how Rudi Bakhtiar was fired after alleging Ailes's sexual advances. They plan to file a harassment suit against Ailes but tell Carlson she'll need evidence and testimony from other women. Pospisil is Fox's newest hire, working with Carlson, but soon accepts a job on The OReilly Factor. Bill O'Reilly fires her that first day, and she gets drunk and sleeps with Fox's Jess Carr. When they wake up, Pospisil says she's not a lesbian and is shocked to see Carr's Hillary Clinton poster. Asked why a liberal lesbian would work for Fox, Carr says she applied for many jobs, but Fox hired her, and now no one else will. Pospisil later is invited to Ailes' office, where he makes her lift her skirt to show him her underwear. She tells Carr, who says she can't get involved. Carlson reveals on air that she supports the assault weapons ban, prompting Ailes to summon her. She's fired and not given a clear reason why. She decides to sue Ailes. He meets with his wife, Beth, and attorneys Susan Estrich and Rudy Giuliani, denying the allegations. All female staffers are asked to stand with Fox. Most do, but Kelly doesn't comment. When the suit is filed, no other women come forward, dashing Carlson's expectations. Viewers turn on her. Kelly finds other women, including Pospisil, who were sexually harassed by Ailes or OReilly. Pospisil says she obeyed Ailes to protect her career but now wants to come forward. Kelly speaks up and learns that 22 other women will too. Estrich tells Ailes that Carlson has recorded conversations that will win the case. Ailes meets with Fox co-creator Rupert Murdoch, who tells him he'll be fired. Ailes asks to break that news, but Murdoch refuses. When Murdoch says he's taking over Fox, Carr refuses to speak up. Pospisil, knowing she'll be fired, quits instead. Meanwhile, Carlson gets 20 million in damages and an apology from Fox but cannot speak about her case. She tells viewers that she doesn't care if they like her, only that they believe her. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] On May 18, 2017, shortly after the death of former Fox News founder Roger Ailes, it was announced that Annapurna Pictures was in the early stages of developing a film centered on the allegations made against Ailes by female employees, including Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson. Charles Randolph was expected to write the film's screenplay. [7] On May 22, 2018, it was announced that Jay Roach had been hired to direct the film. [8] On August 1, 2018, it was announced that Roach, Randolph, Beth Kono, AJ Dix, and Margaret Riley would act as the film's producers and that Denver and Delilah Productions would serve as the film's production company. [9] On October 9, 2018, it was announced that Annapurna Pictures had dropped out of producing the film, reportedly due to concerns over the film's growing budget. At the time of the announcement, it was confirmed that Bron Studios was staying on and that producers were looking at Focus Features, Participant Media, and Amblin Entertainment to help finance the film. [10] The following week, Lionsgate began negotiating to join the production after Focus Features and Amblin Entertainment passed on the project. [11] By the end of the month, Lionsgate was reported to be closing a deal to distribute the film. [12] In December 2018, it was reported that Theodore Shapiro would compose the film's score and that Barry Ackroyd would serve as the film's cinematographer. [13] 14] The film was given the working title Fair and Balanced, before being announced as Bombshell in August 2019. [15] Kelly later stated that she had no involvement with the film. [16] Casting [ edit] Alongside the directing and writing announcements, it was reported that Charlize Theron had entered negotiations to portray Kelly in the film. [8] On August 1, 2018, it was reported that Nicole Kidman had begun negotiations to star as Carlson and that Margot Robbie was in talks to play a composite associate producer at the network, with Theron confirmed to star. [9] 17] Later that month, it was announced that John Lithgow had been cast as Roger Ailes. [18] In September 2018, it was reported that Allison Janney had been cast as lawyer Susan Estrich and that Kate McKinnon had been cast to play a fictional producer. [19] 20] In October 2018, it was announced that Malcolm McDowell, Mark Duplass, and Alice Eve had been cast as Rupert Murdoch, Douglas Brunt, and Ainsley Earhardt, respectively. [21] 12] In November 2018, it was reported that Brigette Lundy-Paine and Liv Hewson had been cast as two fictional characters [22] and that Alanna Ubach, 23] Elisabeth Röhm, Spencer Garrett, Connie Britton, Ashley Greene, Brooke Smith, Michael Buie, Nazanin Boniadi, and Bree Condon had been cast as Jeanine Pirro, Martha MacCallum, Sean Hannity, Beth Ailes, Abby Huntsman, Irena Brigante, Bret Baier, Rudi Bakhtiar, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, respectively. [24] 25] 26] 27] 28] 29] In December 2018, it was announced that Rob Delaney had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role and that Ahna O'Reilly had been cast as Julie Roginsky. [30] 31] In June 2019, Robin Weigert announced she had joined the cast of the film. [32] Filming [ edit] Principal photography for the film began on October 22, 2018, in Los Angeles, California. [33] 34] Release [ edit] The film was scheduled for release on December 20, 2019. [35] However, it was pushed up to December 13, 2019, in a limited release, opening wide on December 20. [36] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of January 31, 2020, Bombshell has grossed 30. 6 million in the United States and Canada, and 12. 4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of 43 million. [3] In its limited opening weekend the film made 312, 100 from four theaters for a per-venue average of 78, 025, the fifth best of 2019. [37] The film went wide at 1, 480 theaters the following weekend and, despite being projected to gross around 10 million, finished sixth with 5. 1 million. The audience was 58% female, with 60% being between 18-34 years old. [38] The following weekend the film made 4. 7 million (a total of 8. 3 million over the five-day Christmas frame) falling to ninth. [39] The film's box office results were seen as a disappointment, with The Hill saying that the presence of other projects about Ailes, such as the documentary Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes and the Showtime series The Loudest Voice, had lowered the demand for a film on the subject. [40] Forbes also noted that audiences likely do not want to "shell out movie theater money and time to watch a film about women being treated terribly by powerful men. especially (generally speaking) women. 41] Critical response [ edit] On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 70% based on 277 reviews, with an average rating of 6. 71/10. The website's critics consensus reads. Bombshell benefits from a terrific cast and a worthy subject, but its impact is muffled by a frustrating inability to go deeper than the sensationalistic surface. 42] On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 64 out of 100, based on reviews from 46 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 43] Audiences polled by PostTrak gave the film an average 4 out of 5 stars, with 70% saying they would definitely recommend it. [38] Variety's Owen Gleiberman gave the film a positive review and wrote: Bombshell is a scalding and powerful movie about what selling, in America, has become. The film is about selling sex, selling a candidate, selling yourself, selling the truth. And about how at Fox News all those things came together. 44] Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: The actors throw themselves into their roles with terrific zeal, enlivened by the often blunt dialogue and the issues at stake. 45] Reactions from the depicted [ edit] In January 2020, Kelly posted a 30-minute video on her YouTube channel of a roundtable discussion, including her, Huddy, Bakhtiar, Brunt and former Fox News producer Julie Zann and their reactions and opinions after viewing a screening of the film. The panel confirmed many details depicted, including having to do the "spin" to show off their bodies to Ailes in private; Zann tearfully noted that reality was "worse than that" and the filmmakers "let Roger off easy. 46] 47] 16] Kelly took particular issue with the scene where Robbie's character blames Kelly for not speaking up, calling the scene victim blaming and noting that the scene was "written by a man" however, she also noted that the scene belongs in the film as a reminder to herself that she could have done more to help other victims. Actually, Susan Collins said The president has been impeached — that's a pretty big lesson. I believe that he will be much more cautious in the future. You misunderstood, unfortunately, when she said Trump will be much more cautious, she doesn't mean that he'll be careful not to abuse his presidential power again, no no, she means that he'll be more careful to not get CAUGHT. 🤦‍♂️.

  4. Spanning a long decade of inconclusive debates and logical arguments on the ever-present question of whether men and women can be just friends, the successful political consultant, Harry Burns, and the New York City journalist, Sally Albright, still haven't found the answer. Against the backdrop of a strictly platonic friendship peppered with intense love/hate moments, Harry and Sally stubbornly refuse to accept that they are the perfect match, even though they love to banter when they are not bickering. Now, after all this time, they still find themselves before this complex ongoing problem. Will the best friends stop denying the pure magnetism that prevailed ever since Harry met Sally?

This movie has a very good vibe to it in November. “Are you okay? ” Harry asks Sally as she starts moaning across the table from him at a crowded New York deli. Billy Crystals character doesnt know it yet, but his best friend (played by Meg Ryan) is about to win an argument in an unusual way. “Oh, God, ” Sally says, running her hand through her golden curls and down her neck, tossing her head back as her moans get louder. Harry puts his sandwich down, a look of defeat on his face as he realizes hes about to watch his best friend prove him wrong — by demonstrating in public that, yes, women fake orgasms. Just watch and listen, buddy. Youll see how hard it is to tell if someones pleasure is real, or manufactured for your own satisfaction. Sally smacks her hand on the table, yelling “Yes! Yes! Yes! ” as the other diners turn to watch. Sally caps it off with a triumphant bite of coleslaw and a smile. The scene lasts only three minutes, but its impact has endured for decades, as the film “When Harry Met Sally. marks its 30th anniversary Friday. The scenes punchline — “Ill have what shes having, ” uttered by Estelle Reiner, mother of the films director, Rob Reiner — ranks 33rd on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 greatest movie quotes of all time. “The orgasm scene became bigger than the movie it came from, ” Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote in a book about his friendship with Nora Ephron, who wrote “When Harry Met Sally. ” It was the moment women realized this thing they were doing in private was, in fact, universal. It was the first time many men learned about the charade. But it also gave viewers a specific, and perhaps skewed, picture of how pleasure should look and sound. Not everyone understood the joke. “When the scene was shown to a Las Vegas convention of movie distributors, the men in the room did not react at all. They didnt get it, ” Cohen wrote. “The women, however, did. They laughed, and their laughter became infectious until, one by one, the men joined in. ” It was not clear to Ephron, Cohen wrote, “whether the women had, in effect, given the men permission to laugh, or whether the men were being told that something up on the screen was funny and they had better laugh or look stupid. ” Jennifer Gunter recalled a similar reaction when she saw the film as a 22-year-old medical student in Canada. The women in the theater exploded in laughter, while the men were silent. “It was a really cool moment, ” said Gunter, who is an obstetrician, gynecologist and author of “ The Vagina Bible. ” Gunter thinks the scene was incredibly validating for women — it gave more of them permission to talk about their lack of satisfaction in the bedroom. “Even if it doesnt make a woman feel that she can have a conversation with her partner, ” Gunter said, “just knowing that youre not the only person doing something is incredibly powerful. ” Few people realize the scene wasnt Ephrons idea but a group effort: Reiner felt the movie needed to reveal a surprising truth about women that made men deeply uncomfortable, notes Erin Carlson, a journalist and author of “ Ill Have What Shes Having: How Nora Ephrons Three Iconic Films Saved the Romantic Comedy. ” Oddly enough, the films producers girlfriends sister — model and actress Dani Minnick — was the one who suggested Harry and Sally discuss women faking orgasms. Ryan said Sally should act out a climax in a public place. And Crystal came up with “Ill have what shes having” and suggested that Reiners mother say it. Ephron loved the idea, and it went into the script. However, filming it was no easy task. Ryan was “anxious and worried about what her then-boyfriend, Dennis Quaid, would think, ” Carlson wrote in an email. (Ryan and Crystal declined interviews for this story, and Reiner did not respond to an email. Ryans performance was underwhelming at first, Carlson noted, so Reiner acted out what he wanted. Carlsons book notes that it took around 30 takes to get the fake orgasm right. “Megs faux orgasm was not only comedy but a transcendent, transgressive response to Harrys hyperverbal macho arrogance, ” Carlson wrote in an email. “Oh, Harry thinks he knows everything about women, does he? Well, Ill show him whos boss. By turning the tables on Harry, the feminist Sally evens the playing field. This is a romantic comedy about love between equals. While Harry cracks more jokes, Sally steals the show. ” The scene has made an impact on young feminists. Lux Alptraum was 6 years old when the film came out and did not see it until her late 20s. Still, she knew of the scene long before she saw the movie. And while she was writing a book called “ Faking It: The Lies Women Tell About Sex — And the Truths They Reveal, ” she was living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, near Katzs Delicatessen, where the orgasm scene was filmed. On Friday, to honor the anniversary, the deli is hosting a contest where fans can reenact the iconic scene — at the same table where Harry and Sally sat. Jake Dell, the delis owner, told the New York Post that customers frequently do their own Sally impressions. “It happens at least once a week, if not more, and more likely at 3 in the morning than 3 in the afternoon, ” Dell said. “Its from men, women, people young and old. Weve seen everyone do it. ” For all the boundaries that scene broke, there are a few it didnt. For example, Harry and Sally do not discuss the reasons someone might fake an orgasm. “Maybe its because sex is not about orgasm for her, ” Alptraum acknowledged, “but her partner does not accept this as an outcome and oftentimes because of her partners ego it might feel incumbent upon her to effectively produce an orgasm whether or not she wants one. And therefore faking it become a really useful tool. ” The same discomfort is made clear in a 1993 “Seinfeld” episode in which Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) admits she never had an orgasm with Jerry Seinfeld when they dated. Jerrys biggests concern wasnt over whether she still enjoyed herself — it was about how Elaines faking affected his ego. Alptraum thinks that pop cultures focus on orgasm as the barometer of pleasure is not always helpful. “Its a kind of clumsy way of trying to point to a much fuzzier and more difficult-to-quantify concept, which is that womens pleasure is not prioritized during sex. Thats the real issue, but I dont know that orgasm itself is inherently the best measure of female pleasure or anybodys pleasure. ” Movies play such a large role in shaping our ideas about sex, Gunter said — and the Katzs scene in “When Harry Met Sally. ” especially at the time, was the rare one that presented a particularly female perspective. But the conversation the movie started is one couples are still tripping over. Gunters book asserts that only half of women are satisfied with their sex lives, and couples find it hard to discuss ways to address that. If Ephron were around to write an update today, what sex-related problem would Harry and Sally discuss? “Millennials distracted by their digital devices, ” Carlson posited, and “not having enough sex. ” READ MORE.

Background The witty and likeable, lightweight, old-fashioned romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally. 1989) was intended to answer the sexual politics question: Can two friends sleep together and still love each other in the morning? The engaging, episodic film keenly observes romance, relationships between males and females, friendship and sex. Two long-time acquaintances Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) grapple with this question over a 12-year period (beginning in the spring of 1977) as their relationship grows and matures. Their love is not "at first sight" but takes years to develop. [Note: Their contrasting names reflect their polar-opposite attitudes toward life: the dark, angst-driven, eternally pessimistic but warm nature of the male, with the bright-eyed, perky, fresh-faced, effervescent and happier character of the female. In fact, Harry says early on, When I buy a new book, I always read the last page first. That way, in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends. That, my friend, is a dark side. He is basically sexist and irascible, while she fights back in a persnickety, eccentric, feminist way. ] The film's sole Academy Award nomination was for Nora Ephron's Best Original Screenplay - written directly for the screen - it lost to Tom Schulman's script for director Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society. [Note: Ephron would go on to write and direct other romantic comedies, including Sleepless in Seattle (1993) with Rob Reiner in an acting role) and You've Got Mail (1998) both with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The respective films were updates of the two classics: Leo McCarey's An Affair to Remember (1957) and Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around the Corner (1940. The film also features the music of Sinatra reincarnation Harry Connick, Jr. This was one of cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld's last efforts in that role - he went on to direct The Addams Family (1991) his directorial debut film) and Addams Family Values (1993) Get Shorty (1995) and Men in Black (1997) among others. The solid lead roles and the supporting performances of the leads' best friends were neglected for Oscar consideration: Carrie Fisher as Marie and Bruno Kirby as Jess. Director Rob Reiner directed this smart, modern-day 'screwball comedy' his fifth film) of the semi-autobiographical tale - it was compiled from the shared recollections of actual romances. Reiner's first four films include the satire of rock documentaries titled This is Spinal Tap! 1984) the teen romantic comedy The Sure Thing (1985) the youthful drama Stand By Me (1986) and the delightful fantasy The Princess Bride (1987. In 2004, the film was adapted for the stage by Marcy Kahan, and opened in London with leads Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan. The summer of 1989's 'sleeper' film has a number of startling resemblances to Woody Allen's witty, urban romance Annie Hall (1977) the title credits (with a black background and white text) along with the film's title song "It Had to Be You" sung by Diane Keaton in Allen's film) being played on a piano, direct camera interviews-testimonials, split-screen techniques, the Manhattan backdrop (including the fall foliage) evocative George Gershwin tunes, obsessive talk about sex and death, the romance between a Jew and non-Jewish woman (shiksa) and Harry and Sally's first meeting in 1977 - is the year the similar film was released. The film's ending parallels Allen's Manhattan (1979. However, the two films also differed: When Harry Met Sally. illustrated how friends can ultimately realize that they're better as lovers, while Annie Hall (1977) showed how lovers may end up better as friends. The title of the film was spoofed in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003. The Story The film opens with an older couple sitting on a love seat. [This is the first of many such pseudo documentary-style scenes of recollections of older couples describing how they first met. They are actors in the roles. Speaking about his successful marriage, the balding husband talks directly into the camera with his white haired wife next to him: I was sitting with my friend Arthur Kornblum, in a restaurant, it was a Horn and Hardart Cafeteria, and this beautiful girl walked in. he gestures toward his wife. and I turned to Arthur and I said, Arthur, you see that girl? I'm going to marry her. And two weeks later we were married. And it's over fifty years later and we're still married. UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO - 1977 The film fades into a scene on a university campus. In close-up, a couple, twenty-six year old Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and his twenty-year old girlfriend Amanda Reese (Michelle Nicastro) are confiding their love to each other and kissing madly. They are oblivious when a yellow station wagon drives up behind them with twenty-one year old Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) Amanda's pal. After their college graduation, Sally is driving Harry, her best friend's boyfriend, to New York from their school in Chicago - it will be an 18 hour trip. Sally is blonde, smiley, clean-living, structured and very organized in an uptight way and she has already planned the entire trip: I have it all figured out. It's an eighteen-hour trip, which breaks down into six shifts of three hours each. Or alternatively, we could break it down by mileage. There's a, there's a map on the visor that I've marked to show the locations where we can change shifts. On the other hand, Harry is more of a slob, as he demonstrates by eating grapes and forgetting to roll down the window when he spits out a grape seed. They immediately take a dislike to each other. Because they have a long trip ahead of them, Harry asks: Why don't you tell me the story of your life. Sally is a would-be journalist who is to "go to journalism school to become a reporter. and she wants to make a start in Manhattan. By contrast, Harry has "a dark side" and is obsessed with death, but Sally is "one of those cheerful people who dot their 'i's' with little hearts. " Harry: When I buy a new book, I always read the last page first. That way, in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends. That, my friend, is a dark side. Sally: That doesn't mean you're deep or anything. I mean, yes, basically I'm a happy person... Harry: So am I. Sally. I don't see that there's anything wrong with that. Harry: Of course not. You're too busy being happy. Do you ever think about death? Sally: Yes. Harry: Sure you do. A fleeting thought that drifts in and out of the transom of your mind. I spend hours, I spend days... Sally. and you think this makes you a better person? Harry: Look, when the s- t comes down, I'm gonna be prepared and you're not, that's all I'm saying. Sally: And in the meantime, you're gonna ruin your whole life waiting for it. As in Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam (1972) the opinionated Harry is also obsessed with the film Casablanca (1942) and they argue about it (in voice-over. expressing their two contrary perspectives about the film's finale. Her practical choice, later denied, is that she would prefer to leave with Victor Laszlo rather than stay with the self-sacrificing, romantic hero Rick (Humphrey Bogart) Harry: He wants her to leave. That's why he puts her on the plane. Sally: I don't think she wants to stay. Harry: Of course she wants to stay. Wouldn't you rather be with Humphrey Bogart than the other guy? Sally: I don't want to spend the rest of my life in Casablanca married to a man who runs a bar. That probably sounds very snobbish to you, but I don't. Harry: You'd rather be in a passionless marriage - Sally. and be the First Lady of Czechoslovakia - Harry. than live with the man. you've had the greatest sex of your life with, just because he owns a bar and that is all he does. Sally: Yes, and so would any woman in her right mind. Women are very practical. Even Ingrid Bergman, which is why she gets on the plane at the end of the movie. As they enter a roadside cafe, Harry demonstrates his sexist and argumentative nature. Soon, Sally is debating the odds of having great sex with a guy named 'Sheldon' while they order a dinner meal. She is compulsively concerned about how her food should be prepared: Harry: Obviously, you haven't had great sex yet... Sally: It just so happens that I have had plenty of good sex. Sally's infuriated response is so loud that other customers stop eating to notice her response. ) Harry: With whom did you have this great sex? Sally: embarrassed) I'm not going to tell you that! Harry: Fine. Don't tell me. Sally: Shel Gordon. Harry: Shel. Sheldon? No, no. You did not have great sex with Sheldon. Sally: I did too. Harry: No, you didn't. A Sheldon can do your income taxes. If you need a root canal, Sheldon's your man, but humpin' and pumpin' is not Sheldon's strong suit. It's the name. 'Do it to me, Sheldon. ' You're an animal, Sheldon. Ride me, big Sheldon. It doesn't work. Waitress: What can I get you? Sheldon: I'll have the Number Three. Sally: I'd like the chef salad, please, with the oil and vinegar on the side. And the apple pie a la I'd like the pie heated, and I don't want the ice cream on top. I want it on the side. And I'd like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it. If not, then no ice cream, just whipped cream, but only if it's real. If it's out of a can, then nothing. Waitress: Not even the pie? Sally: No, just the pie. But then not heated. Curious about her relationship with Sheldon but also feigning disinterest, Harry pursues the issue further: Harry: So how come you broke up with Sheldon? Sally: How do you know we broke up? Harry: Because if you didn't break up, you wouldn't be with me, you'd be off with Sheldon the Wonder Schlong. Sally: First of all, I am not with you. And second of all, it is none of your business why we broke up. Harry: You're right, you're right. I don't want to know. Sally: Well, if you must know, it was because he was very jealous and I had these Days of the Week underpants. Harry: He makes a loud buzzer sound) I'm sorry. I need a judge's ruling on this. Days of the Week underpants? Sally: Yes. They had the days of the week on them, and I thought they were sort of funny - and then one day, Sheldon says to me, You never wear Sunday. He's all suspicious. Where was Sunday? Where had I left Sunday? And I told him, and he didn't believe me. Harry: What? Sally: They don't make Sunday. Harry: Why not? Sally: matter-of-factly) Because of God. After Sally has finished figuring out her portion of the bill and tip that she will pay, by using a calculator, Harry just stares at her and flirtatiously remarks how attractive she is: Harry: smiling) You're a very attractive person. Sally: suspicious) Thank you. Harry: Amanda never said how attractive you were. Sally: Well, maybe she doesn't think I'm attractive. Harry: I don't think it's a matter of opinion. Empirically, you are attractive. (She gets up. ) Sally: astonished) Amanda is my friend. Harry: So? Sally: So, you're going with her. Sally: So, you're coming on to me. Harry: No I wasn't. (With disbelief, she stares at him. ) As they leave the diner, Sally defensively believes he is "coming on" to her. To carry his line of reasoning further - to get her riled up and to argue his point - Harry proposes going to bed with her. Ultimately, Harry believes that men and women cannot be friends, because sex will always interfere. [This is a classic discussion of the film's main question: Can a man and a woman ever be 'just friends. Harry: What? Can't a man say a woman is attractive without it being a come-on? All right, all right. Let's just say, just for the sake of argument, that it was a come-on. What do you want me to do about it? I take it back, OK? I take it back. Sally: You can't take it back. Sally: Because it's already out there. Harry: Oh jeez. What are we supposed to do? Call the cops? It's already out there! Sally: Just let it lie, OK? Harry: Great! Let it lie. That's my policy. (They get into the car. ) That's what I always say. Let it lie. Want to spend the night in a motel? She glares at him. You see what I did? I didn't let it lie. Sally: Harry - Harry: I said I would and I didn't. I went the other Sally: We are just going to be friends, OK? Harry: Great, friends. It's the best realize, of course, that we can never be friends. Sally: Why not? Harry: What I'm saying is - and this is not a come-on in any way, shape, or form - is that men and women can't be friends, because the sex part always gets in the way. Sally: That's not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved. Harry: No, you don't. Sally: Yes, I do. Harry: You only think you do. Sally: You're saying I'm having sex with these men without my knowledge? Harry: No, what I'm saying is they all want to have sex with you. Sally: They do not. Harry: Do too. Sally: How do you know? Harry: Because no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her. Sally: So you're saying that a man can be friends with a woman he finds unattractive. Harry: No, you pretty much want to nail them, too. Sally: What if they don't want to have sex with you? Harry: Doesn't matter, because the sex thing is already out there, so the friendship is ultimately doomed, and that is the end of the story. Sally: Well, I guess we're not gonna be friends, then. Harry: Guess not. Sally: That's too bad. You were the only person that I knew in New York. The camera tracks their car as it crosses the George Washington Bridge into New York City, and they arrive at Harry's destination near Washington Square. In an awkward moment of goodbye, they shake hands and part ways after an "interesting" ride: Harry: It was nice knowin' ya. Sally: Yeah. (They shake hands - and she waves. After walking to the car door, she turns. Well, have a nice life. Harry: You too. As an interlude, a second direct-camera interview is presented, with an even older couple sitting together on the same loveseat: Woman: We fell in love in high school. Man: Yeah, we were high school sweethearts. Woman: But then after our junior year, his parents moved away. Man: But I never forgot her. Woman: He never forgot me. Man: No, her face was burned on my brain. And it was thirty-four years later that I was walking down Broadway and I saw her come out of Toffinetti's. Woman: And we both looked at each other, and it was just as though not a single day had gone by. Man: She was just as beautiful as she was at sixteen. Woman: He was just the same. He looked exactly the same. FIVE YEARS LATER At La Guardia Airport in New York, another loving couple are kissing at one of the departure gates. Sally and her new boyfriend named Joe (Steven Ford. When Harry, now wearing a suit and tie, passes by the couple to catch a plane to Washington, he notices them, goes past, and then backs up. Joe, a lawyer, is an acquaintance of Harry's, who has become a political consultant. Although he greets Joe, Harry is unable to place Sally in his memory, but he looks quizzically at her after being introduced. When Harry boards the plane, she tells Joe about her distasteful memories of their college-era drive to New York: Sally: Thank God he couldn't place me. I drove from college to New York with him five years ago and it was the longest night of my made a pass at me, and when I said no - he was going with a girlfriend of mine - oh God, I can't remember her name. (jokingly) Don't get involved with me, Joe, I am twenty-six years old and I can't even remember the name of the girl I was such good friends with, I wouldn't get involved with her boyfriend. I said we could just be friends, and - this part I remember - he said that men and women could never really be friends. Do you think that's true? Joe: No. Sally: Do you have any woman friends, just friends? Joe: No, but I will get one if it's important to you. Finding themselves on the same plane and only one row apart, Harry overhears Sally's fussy ordering, and then suddenly places her: The University of Chicago, right. They renew acquaintances after he switches seats to be next to her. Both of them are in relationships - Sally has only known Joe for a month and she tells Harry: Neither one of us is looking to get married right now. " On the contrary, Harry, a crude and cynical womanizer who is "madly in love" is "embracing life" according to Sally) and getting married to Helen Hillson, a lawyer: Harry. just get to a certain point when you get tired of the whole thing. Sally: What whole thing? Harry: The whole life-of-a-single-guy. You meet someone, you have the safe lunch, you decide you like each other enough to move on to dinner, you go dancing, you do the white man's overbite, you go back to her place, you have sex, and the minute you're finished, you know what goes through your mind? How long do I have to lie here and hold her before I can get up and go home? Is thirty seconds enough? Sally: That's what you're thinking? Is that true? Harry: Sure. All men think that. How long do you like to be held afterwards? All night, right? See, that's the problem. Somewhere between thirty seconds and all night is your problem. Sally: I don't have a problem. Harry: Yeah, you do. While staying over in Washington, Harry proposes that they both have dinner together - as friends. As they stood on the moving escalator at the airport, he struggles to explain that he has an amendment to his earlier rule about relationships between men and women: Yes, that's right. They can't be both of them are involved with other people. Then they can. This is an amendment to the earlier rule. If the two people are in relationships, the pressure of possible involvement is lifted. That doesn't work either. Because what happens then is the person you're involved with can't understand why you need to be friends with the person you're just friends with, like it means something is missing from the relationship and wanted to go outside to get it. Then when you say, No, no, no, no, it's not true, nothing is missing from the relationship. the person you're involved with then accuses you of being secretly attracted to the person you're just friends with, which you probably are - I mean, come on, who the hell are we kidding, let's face it - which brings us back to the earlier rule before the amendment, which is men and women can't be friends. So where does it leave us? They both realize that they must not see each other and part ways again.

When Harry Met Sally...
When Harry Met Sally is a character driven romantic drama about two platonic friends who struggles to see the affection for each other. The chemistry is decent enough to charm their way out, but fortunately it doesn't need to since its writing is the protagonist in itself.
The flirty talk, hilarious topics and references, makes the pragmatic conversations thoroughly entertaining and electrifying. Addition to that, Crystal's comic timing and Ryan's support to him, blends in aptly. The structure of the feature is newer and fresh that is respected equally as much as the characters have been.
The little nuances like fiddling with the props around the scene and a brief love track narrated by various couple in an interview is just pure delight. Reiner's world is brimmed with such sweet innuendos that makes it utterly pleasing with a big smile on the face that stays with the audience long after the curtain drops.
The background score is a bit disappointing along with the sound department although the cinematography (like the phone call between Harry and Sally) play a vital role in storytelling and has fine editing.
It is shot with bright and light colors spread across the whole screen that is appealing for the viewers from the first frame. As mentioned earlier, the performance is decent if not anything extraordinary especially by the lead cast Crystal and Ryan.
Reiner's execution is unfortunately chalky around the edges but with a sincere heart at the center of it, it sails off the shore safely. Smart and funny conversation, simple and sensible track and, a safer perspective are the high points of the feature.
When Harry Met Sally is a sophisticated love track on context of its subjective procedure that even respects the space of audience.

The film raises the question "Can men and women ever just be friends. and advances many ideas about relationships that became household concepts, such as "high-maintenance" 1] and the "transitional person. 2] The origins of the film were derived from Reiner's return to single life after a divorce. An interview Ephron conducted with Reiner provided the basis for Harry. Sally was based on Ephron and some of her friends. Crystal came on board and made his own contributions to the screenplay, making Harry funnier. Ephron supplied the structure of the film with much of the dialogue based on the real-life friendship between Reiner and Crystal. The soundtrack consists of standards performed by Harry Connick Jr., with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman. For his work on the soundtrack, Connick won his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. In early 2004, the film was adapted for the stage in a production starring Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan. Plot [ edit] In 1977, Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago and share the drive to New York City, where Sally is beginning journalism school and Harry is starting a career. Harry is dating Sally's friend Amanda. During the drive, Harry and Sally discuss their differing ideas about relationships; Sally disagrees with Harry's assertion that men and women cannot be friends as "the sex part gets in the way. At a diner, Harry tells Sally she is attractive, and she angrily accuses him of making a pass at her. They part in New York on unfriendly terms. Five years later, Harry and Sally find themselves on the same flight. Sally is dating Harry's neighbor Joe, and Harry is engaged to Helen, which surprises Sally. Harry suggests they become friends, forcing him to qualify his previous position about the impossibility of male-female friendships. They separate, concluding that they will not be friends. Harry and Sally run into each other again in a bookstore five years later. They have coffee and talk about their previous relationships; Sally and Joe broke up because she wanted a family and he did not want to marry, and Harry's wife Helen left him for another man. They take a walk and become friends. They have late-night phone conversations, go to dinner, and spend time together, discussing their love lives. During a New Year's Eve party, Harry and Sally find themselves attracted to each other. Even though they remain friends, they set each other up with their respective best friends, Marie and Jess. When the four go to a restaurant, Marie and Jess become fast friends and later become engaged. Over the phone, Sally tearfully tells Harry that her ex is getting married. He rushes to her apartment to comfort her, and they have sex; Harry leaves the next morning distressed. Their friendship cools until a heated argument at Jess and Marie's wedding dinner. Harry attempts to mend his friendship with Sally, but she feels that they cannot be friends. At a New Year's Eve party that year, Sally feels alone without Harry by her side. Harry spends New Year's alone, walking around the city. As Sally decides to leave the party early, Harry appears and declares his love for her. She argues that the only reason he is there is because he is lonely, but he lists the many things he realized he loves about her. They kiss and marry three months later, exactly 12 years and three months after their first meeting. The plot also contains several interlaced segments throughout the film where fictitious older married couples narrate to the camera their stories of how they met. The last couple that is interviewed before the closing credits is Harry and Sally. Cast [ edit] Billy Crystal as Harry Burns Meg Ryan as Sally Albright Carrie Fisher as Marie Fisher Bruno Kirby as Jess Fisher Steven Ford as Joe Lisa Jane Persky as Alice Michelle Nicastro as Amanda Reese Kevin Rooney as Ira Stone Harley Kozak as Helen Hillson Estelle Reiner as Female Customer Production [ edit] In 1984, director Rob Reiner, producer Andy Scheinman and writer Nora Ephron met over lunch at the Russian Tea Room in New York City to develop a project. [3] Reiner pitched an idea for a film that Ephron rejected. [4] The second meeting transformed into a long discussion about Reiner and Scheinman's lives as single men. Reiner remembers, I was in the middle of my single life. I'd been divorced for a while. I'd been out a number of times, all these disastrous, confusing relationships one after another. 5] The next time they all met, Reiner said that he had always wanted to do a film about two people who become friends and do not have sex because they know it will ruin their relationship but have sex anyway. Ephron liked the idea, and Reiner acquired a deal at a studio. [3] For materials, Ephron interviewed Reiner and Scheinman about their lives, creating the basis for Harry. Reiner was constantly depressed and pessimistic yet funny. Ephron also got bits of dialogue from these interviews. [3] She worked on several drafts over the years while Reiner made Stand By Me and The Princess Bride. [4] Billy Crystal "experienced vicariously" Reiner's (his best friend at the time) return to single life after divorcing comedian/filmmaker Penny Marshall and in the process was unconsciously doing research for the role of Harry. [3] During the screenwriting process when Ephron would not feel like writing, she would interview people who worked for the production company. Some of the interviews appeared in the film as the interludes between certain scenes featuring couples talking about how they met, 3] although the material was rewritten and reshot with actors. [6] For example, in the scene where Sally and Harry appear on a split-screen, talking on the telephone while watching their respective television sets, channel surfing, was something that Crystal and Reiner did every night. [6] Originally, Ephron wanted to call the film How They Met and went through several different titles. Reiner even started a contest with the crew during principal photography: whoever came up with the title won a case of champagne. [4] In order to get into the lonely mindset of Harry when he was divorced and single, Crystal stayed by himself in a separate room from the cast and crew while they were shooting in Manhattan. [6] The script initially ended with Harry and Sally remaining friends and not pursuing a romantic relationship because she felt that was "the true ending" as did Reiner. [4] Eventually, Ephron and Reiner realized that it would be a more appropriate ending for them to marry, though they admit that this is generally not a realistic outcome. [7] When posed the film's central question, can men and women just be friends, Ryan replied, Yes, men and women can just be friends. I have a lot of platonic (male) friends, and sex doesn't get in the way. Crystal said, I'm a little more optimistic than Harry. But I think it is difficult. Men basically act like stray dogs in front of a supermarket. I do have platonic (women) friends, but not best, best, best friends. 8] Rob Reiner initially envisioned actress Susan Dey for the role of Sally Albright. When she declined, he later considered Elizabeth Perkins. He also considered casting Elizabeth McGovern. Molly Ringwald was almost cast, but Meg Ryan convinced Reiner to give her the role. Reiner's mother Estelle and daughter Tracy both played roles in the film. Katz's Delicatessen scene [ edit] Film still from the famous restaurant scene Katz's Deli still hangs this sign above the table. In a scene featuring the two title characters having lunch at Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, the couple are arguing about a man's ability to recognize when a woman is faking an orgasm. Sally claims that men cannot tell the difference, and to prove her point, she vividly (fully clothed) fakes one as other diners watch. The scene ends with Sally casually returning to her meal as a nearby patron (played by Reiner's mother) places her order: I'll have what she's having. When Estelle Reiner died at age 94 in 2008, The New York Times referred to her as the woman "who delivered one of the most memorably funny lines in movie history. 9] This scene was shot again and again, and Ryan demonstrated her fake orgasms for hours. [7] Katz's Deli still hangs a sign above the table that says, Where Harry met Sally. hope you have what she had. 10] 11] This classic scene was born when the film started to focus too much on Harry. Crystal remembers saying. We need something for Sally to talk about. and Nora said, Well, faking orgasm is a great one. and right away we said, Well, the subject is good. and then Meg came on board and we talked with her about the nature of the idea and she said, Well, why don't I just fake one, just do one. 3] Ryan suggested that the scene take place in a restaurant, 12] and it was Crystal who came up with the scene's classic punchline – "I'll have what she's having. 3] In 2005, the quote was listed 33rd on the AFI's 100 Years. 100 Movie Quotes list of memorable movie lines. Reiner recalls that at a test screening, all of the women in the audience were laughing while all of the men were silent. [4] In late 2013, Improv Everywhere, the New York City initiative behind the annual No Pants Day in the subways and various flash-mob stunts, convened and filmed a re-enactment in Katz's Delicatessen. While a look-alike couple performed the scene, 30 others joined as if it was contagious. Surprised staff and customers responded in appreciation. The film and follow-up interviews are public. [13] In October of the same year, Katz's invited Baron Von Fancy to display his ten-foot-high mural quoting the famous line in its pop-up gallery next door, The Space. [14] Soundtrack [ edit] The When Harry Met Sally. soundtrack album features American singer and pianist Harry Connick Jr. Bobby Colomby, the drummer for Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a friend of Reiner's and recommended Harry Connick Jr., giving the director a tape of the musician's music. Reiner was struck by Connick's voice and how he sounded like a young Frank Sinatra. The movie's soundtrack album was released by Columbia Records in July 1989. The soundtrack consists of standards performed by Harry Connick Jr. with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman. Connick won his first Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. [15] Arrangements and orchestrations on " It Had to Be You. Where or When. I Could Write a Book" and "But Not for Me" are by Connick and Shaiman. Other songs were performed as piano / vocal solos, or with Connick's trio featuring Benjamin Jonah Wolfe on bass and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. Also appearing on the album are tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and guitarist Joy Berliner. The soundtrack went to #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart and was within the top 50 on the Billboard 200. [16] Connick also toured North America in support of this album. [17] It went on to reach double-platinum status. [18] The music in the film is performed by various artists, such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, and Harry Connick Jr. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] Columbia Pictures released the film using the "platform" technique which involved opening it in a few select cities letting positive word of mouth generate interest and then gradually expanding distribution over subsequent weeks. On its opening weekend, it grossed 1 million in 41 theaters. [19] Billy Crystal was worried that the film would flop at the box office because it was up against several summer blockbuster films, like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Batman. [3] The film went into wide release on July 21, 1989, and grossed 8. 8 million on its opening weekend in 775 theaters. [19] This was later expanded to 1, 174 theaters and the film grossed a total of 92. 8 million in North America, well above its 16 million budget. [19] Critical response [ edit] When Harry Met Sally. received a 90% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 03/10. The website's critical consensus reads, Rob Reiner's touching, funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies, and he was ably abetted by the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. 20] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 76 out of 100, based on 17 critics. [21] The film led Roger Ebert to call Reiner "one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy" and said that it was "most conventional, in terms of structure and the way it fulfills our expectations. But what makes it special, apart from the Ephron screenplay, is the chemistry between Crystal and Ryan. 22] In a review for The New York Times, Caryn James called When Harry Met Sally. an "often funny but amazingly hollow film" that "romanticized lives of intelligent, successful, neurotic New Yorkers" James characterized it as "the sitcom version of a Woody Allen film, full of amusing lines and scenes, all infused with an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu. 23] Rita Kempley of The Washington Post praised Meg Ryan as the "summer's Melanie Griffith – a honey-haired blonde who finally finds a showcase for her sheer exuberance. Neither naif nor vamp, she's a woman from a pen of a woman, not some Cinderella of a Working Girl. 24] Mike Clark of USA Today gave the film three out of four stars, writing, Crystal is funny enough to keep Ryan from all-out stealing the film. She, though, is smashing in an eye-opening performance, another tribute to Reiner's flair with actors. 25] David Ansen provided one of the rare negative reviews of the film for Newsweek. He criticized the casting of Crystal, Not surprisingly he handles the comedy superbly, but he's too cool and self-protective an actor to work as a romantic leading man" and felt that as a film, of wonderful parts, it doesn't quite add up. 26] Accolades [ edit] Association Category Nominee Results Academy Award Best Original Screenplay Nora Ephron Nominated American Comedy award Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture Won Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture ASCAP Film and Television Music award Top Box Office Films Marc Shaiman British Academy Film award Best Film Rob Reiner Best Screenplay - Original Casting Society of America award Best Casting for Feature Film, Comedy Jane Jenkins Janet Hershenson Chicago Film Critics Association award Best Actress David di Donatello award Best Foreign Director Best Foreign Actress Directors Guild award Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures DVD Exclusive award Best Audio Commentary Golden Globe award Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Director - Motion Picture Best Screenplay - Motion Picture Best Lead Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Lead Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Writers Guild award Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Legacy [ edit] Over the years, When Harry Met Sally. has become "the quintessential contemporary feel-good relationship movie that somehow still rings true. 27] Ephron still received letters from people obsessed with the film and still had "people who say to me all the time, I was having a Harry-and-Sally relationship with him or her. 27] The film is 23rd on AFI's 100 Years. 100 Laughs list of the top comedy films in American cinema and number 60 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies. 28] Entertainment Weekly named it as one of the Top 10 romantic movies of all time. Ready for the meet-cute? Sally Albright meets Harry Burns when the two of them drive from college at the University of Chicago to New York City to start their new lives. They spend the trip bickering like an old married couple. Their main point of contention? Harry's belief that men and women can't be friends because sex will always get in the way. Sally begs to differ. After eighteen hours in a yellow station wagon, they part ways in Greenwich Village. "Have a nice life. Five years later, Sally's boyfriend is seeing her off at the airport. They run into Harry, who's on Sally's flight. While traveling, Harry and Sally get to talking—okay, bickering—about Harry's confirmed belief that men and women can't be friends, mainly, before parting ways once again… … until five years later, when they run into each other at a bookstore. Newly divorced, Harry seems a bit sadder, but also a bit nicer. He and Sally get to talking; she just ended her relationship, too. They agree to become friends. And they do. They live the ultimate friendship for a while: they can say anything to each other. They watch TV together over the phone. Harry helps Sally get a Christmas tree. They karaoke together. Basically, they're everyone's dream besties. That is, until they sleep together. Yeah, that doesn't go so well. The morning after, Harry bails, a bit freaked, and Sally's clearly hurt. The two don't talk for weeks, finally reuniting at their friends' wedding, where they get into a knockdown, drag-out, Sally-slaps-Harry fight. Looks like Harry was right—men and women can't be friends, because sex will always get in the way. Best friendship: kaput. Harry calls Sally, oh, a dozen times. He wants to apologize, but she just won't pick up the stinkin' phone. When she finally does, he invites her to be his date on New Year's, but she says no dice: I'm not your consolation prize. Cut to New Year's Eve. Harry's alone, and pretending he's not miserable. Sally's out with her friends and not even bothering to pretend she's not miserable. As he meanders through the empty streets of New York, Harry realizes something: he's in love with Sally. He rushes to the party, and just as the clock strikes midnight, the two reunite. Harry gives her the skinny: he loves her, he wants to be with her, and that's that. After a wee bit of protesting, Sally returns his affections and the two kiss—like ya do at the end of a rom com. No more hemming and hawing. These two get their happily ever after. Scene 1 Scene 1 Wait. Where's Billy Crystal? On screen, an old couple tells the story of how they met, presumably to an off-screen interviewer. The man was sitting in a restaurant when a beautiful girl walked in. He turned to his friend and said, you see that girl? I'm going to marry her. And he did. Two weeks later. "Fifty years later, and we're still married. Ain't that nice? Scene 2 Scene 2 It's 1977 at the University of Chicago. A couple—Billy Crystal and his on-screen girlfriend—exchanges I-love-yous and starts making out. rather vigorously. A blonde in a Farrah Fawcett do—that would be Meg Ryan—pulls up in a car and ahems them to attention. The brunette introduces the blonde—Sally—to her boyfriend, Harry. Harry offers to take "the first shift. but Sally declines and tells him to pop his gear in the trunk. Looks like these two strangers are going on a road trip. After a lovey-dovey goodbye, interrupted by a not-so-accidental honk from Sally, Harry hops in. The two drive through the gates and head out on the road. Scene 3 Scene 3 Sally says she's got it figured out. "It" being their road trip schedule. We're getting the sense she's a bit of a control freak. She's telling Harry about her plan when he starts rummaging around the backseat and pulls out a bunch of grapes. He's not exactly a neat eater, and Sally seems a little disgusted. They've got 18 hours to kill before they hit New York, so Harry wants to hear the story of Sally's life. He finds out that she's headed to New York so she can go to journalism school and become a reporter and have stuff, you know, happen to her. Harry doesn't seem to think this is the best idea. He wonders what it would be like if nothing ever happened to Sally and she dies alone in New York. Um, depressing. That's what it would be like. Harry has a dark side, it seems. Sally claims she does, too, but we can tell that's probably not true. Basically she's a happy person—so sue her. Harry's all, do you ever think about death. He does—for hours, days. We're betting Sally doesn't think about death, well, ever. One thing she does think is that all this negativity is going to ruin his life. Scene 4 Scene 4 A few hours later, the pair is arguing about Casablanca. We thought everyone pretty much agreed on the awesomeness of that movie, but Harry and Sally have found a point of contention: they totally disagree on the ending. Sally thinks the ending makes sense—she wouldn't want to be married to some guy who owns a bar in Casablanca, even if that guy happened to be Humphrey Bogart. Harry thinks that makes no sense. Who wants to live in a passionless marriage? Oh, wait. Harry knows why Sally likes the ending: she hasn't had any good sex in her life. Well, that's a big assumption. Sally begs to differ, and accidentally announces that fact to the diner they've just walked into. It's awkward. Harry pushes it. With whom did she allegedly have such great sex? Sheldon, that's who. Harry's skeptical that a guy with a name like Sheldon could have great sex with Sally. (Sorry, Sheldons of the world. The views expressed by Harry to not represent those held by Shmoop. Or Sally, for that matter. The two are interrupted by a waitress, who takes their orders. Harry wants a "number 3. while Sally's order is a bit more… persnickety. She's got all kinds of very specific requests. Harry looks at her like she's got an elephant trunk growing out of her forehead. He wants to know why she broke up with Sheldon. After demurring a bit, Sally tells him it was because "he was very jealous, and I had these days-of-the-week underpants. It's really only something you can understand if you watch the scene, so here you go. Scene 5 Scene 5 A few minutes later, they've finished their meal, and Sally is splitting the bill. Harry's staring at her. Uh oh. He tells her she's very attractive. At first, Sally's flattered, and then it hits her: he's hitting on her. Or at least that's what she thinks. Harry denies it. "Can't a man say a woman is attractive without it being a come-on. He tries to take it back, but according to Sally, it's already out there. They've got to let it lie. Harry has never let a thing lie in his life. He invites her to spend the night in the hotel. Sally tells him that they're just going to be friends, but Harry says no dice. See, according to Harry, men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way. Surprise, surprise: Sally disagrees. She's got tons of dude friends. Yeah, who all want to sleep with you, Harry says. Guess we can't be friends then, Sally says. The next day, the two arrive in New York and part ways in Greenwich Village. They shake hands, tell each other to "have a nice life. and that's about it. End of movie. Wait. That can't be right… Scene 6 Scene 6 We cut away to another adorable old couple. The woman tells us that they fell in love in high school. But they split up because his parents moved away. Star-crossed lovers, much? Ah, but he never forgot her. Thirty-four years later, he saw her on the street in New York City. They looked at each other, and it was "just as if not a single day had gone by. Swoon. Scene 7 Scene 7 Five years later, and we're at the airport. Sally is making out with a handsome blonde man. Harry hustles by and recognizes… the man. His name's Joe. Sally's relieved he didn't notice her. She gives Joe the skinny on their disastrous road trip. "It was the longest night of my life. Thinking back, she remembers what he said about the fact that men and women can't be friends. She wants to know if Joe thinks the same. As they part ways, Joe drops the L-bomb and she says it back. Looks like these two are serious. Sally's still swooning from the I-love-you exchange as she sits on the plane. Harry's head pops up over the seat as he's trying to scope her out. He can't quite place her. And then she orders her drink. It's exactly as persnickety as her diner order, and it all comes flooding back. "University of Chicago. Harry says. He switches places with Sally's seat partner so the two can chat, much to Sally's annoyance. Harry starts to ask about her life. He knows she and Joe have been together about a month, and tells her how he knows: because Joe is still willing to take her to the airport. He wants to know if the two are going to get married. Sally demurs. But he sees an opening and he tells her that he's getting married. Sally seems frankly amazed that he found someone willing to marry him: It's just so optimistic of you, Harry. She's happy he's embracing life, but Harry tells her the real reason he's getting hitched: he's tired of the dating life. He's really tired of doing the "white man's overbite. The plane lands and the two run into each other on a moving walkway as they head out of the airport. Harry invites her to dinner—just as friends, of course. Sally calls him out: didn't he once say that men and women can't be friends? Harry assures her that they can—if they're both involved in relationships. No wait, that won't work either, he realizes. So where does that leave them? Absolutely nowhere, folks. Sally says her goodbyes and hustles down the walkway. Scene 8 Scene 8 Let's meet some more old folks, shall we? The man tells us that they were married forty years ago—for three years. And then they got divorced. Then he married someone else. Divorced. Then someone else. Divorce. Then they ran into each other at a funeral, of all places. He couldn't take his eyes off her. They went for coffee, and a month later they got hitched again, 35 years to the day after their first marriage. The man smiles at her. Scene 9 Scene 9 Another five years have passed. Sally's sitting at an outdoor cafe with two of her female friends, talking about boyz. One of them—played by Princess Leia, oops we mean Carrie Fisher—is complaining about how her boyfriend is never gonna leave his wife. Then Sally drops the bomb: she and Joe broke up. But she's not that upset. Marie whips out her Rolodex filled with men. She's wants to set Sally up with someone. This gal moves fast. Sally doesn't want to date anyone. She's just not interested in a "transitional man. But Marie thinks she should act fast. Scene 10 Scene 10 We're at a football game and the crowd is doing the wave. Everyone, that is, except Harry and his friend. Good for them. Harry tells his friend—that would be Jess, played by Bruno Kirby—that his wife Helen left him. Yep, Harry's getting divorced. It turns out the two were having some problems. Helen mentioned that she wanted a trial separation. They had barely agreed to that when the movers showed up at the door. They'd been booked for a week. So she had been planning this. And as it turns out, it's all a lie. Helen fell in love with a tax attorney, like ya do, and she moved in with him. So much for Harry being madly in love. Scene 11 Scene 11 Marie and Sally are in a bookstore, talking about Marie's married boyfriend. He just dropped over a hundred bucks on lingerie for his wife. The dude is clearly not leaving her. Marie knows it, but she doesn't seem to want to believe it. Then Marie notices a man staring at Sally. Lo and behold, it's Harry. Just when Sally's dismissing the encounter because Harry never remembers her, Harry walks up and says "Sally Albright. Harry seems different somehow. He's being, well, nice. When he asks after her, Sally tells him that she and Joe parted ways. Harry confesses that he's getting divorced. Harry wants to know what happened. Scene 12 Scene 12 Harry and Sally are at lunch, chatting up a storm. Sally tells the story of the big break up. She and Joe used to be happy together because they thought they had it made—they weren't married, had no kids, and could do, well, whatever they wanted. Including sex on the kitchen floor. Well, they could have, anyway. And everyone they knew who did get married definitely didn't have the time or inclination for sexytimes and romantic adventures. But Sally realized that their life wasn't the big fantasy they thought it was. She wanted marriage. And kids. The whole shebang. Joe? Not so much. And that, folks, was the end of that. Sally swears she feels fine. She's totally over him. Harry's super impressed at how healthy she sounds. The two walk outside after lunch and exchange some banter. Harry confesses he didn't like her very much the first time they met. Ditto, says Sally. Harry apologizes for being a jerk all those years ago on their road trip, and Sally asks him to dinner—as friends, of course. Looks like Harry's old adage about friendships with the opposite sex is being disproven… Scene 13 Scene 13 We meet yet another old couple. They adorably tell their story, all while talking over each other. These two had a whole bunch of near-misses. They were born in the same hospital and grew up right near each other. They even worked in the same building. But they never met. So wait, how are they together? They met in an elevator at the Ambassador Hotel in Chicago, of all places. And he rode up nine extra floors just to keep talking to her. How's that for a meet-cute? Scene 14 Scene 14 We're treated to a montage of sorts. While Harry and Sally go about their daily business, we hear a voiceover of a typical phone conversation between the two. We see them at work, eating lunch, hanging out at home, and running errands together. On the phone, they discuss Casablanca —they're watching together, but alone, in their respective apartments. Harry calls out Sally for saying she agrees with Ingrid Bergman choosing Victor Lazlo in the end. She denies ever saying it. Roll the tape, folks. She totally did—all those years ago on the road trip. Harry drops it, and the two move onto a different topic. Harry's not in a good place after the divorce. He's not sleeping and he's totally down in the dumps. Sally admits she went to bed at 7:30 the other night, but she swears she's not depressed. She doesn't miss Joe. Not even a little. Harry, on the other hand, misses Helen like whoa. The last scene of Casablanca comes on, and the two watch as Ingrid Bergman breaks poor Bogey's heart. Harry praises Ingrid Bergman for being low-maintenance. A total LM. Sally wants to know if she's low-maintenance or high-maintenance, and Harry tells her she's the worst kind of woman: Sally thinks she's low-maintenance, but really she's high-maintenance. We mean, we've seen her order, right? As the movie— Casablanca, not When Harry Met Sally —draws to a close, the two say goodnight and Harry tells Sally he plans to stay up and moan all night. Which he does. Scene 15 Scene 15 Harry and Sally are strolling the streets of New York and discuss sex dreams. Sally shares her one and only sexual fantasy: a nameless, faceless man rips off all her clothes. And… scene. Harry's unimpressed. Cut to the Met—in the Ancient Egypt room. Harry decides to talk in a weird accent, and makes Sally repeat after him: waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash. But I would be proud to partake of your pecan pie. In the same voice, he asks her to the movies. He makes a joke about her having a hot date, but as it turns out, she actually does. He drops the accent—and his guard. He thinks it's great that she has a date. Then he tells her to wear a skirt. She looks good in skirts. Sally thinks it's time for Harry to get back in the dating saddle, but he disagrees. Poor Harry isn't ready yet. Scene 16 Scene 16 Cut to the two of them discussing their dates. Neither one went well. Sally's date actually used a strand of her hair as floss. Yeah, you read that right. Harry's date wasn't the problem. It was that she went to Michigan State, which reminded him of Helen, and he lost his marbles. Sally tries to find solace in the fact that this just takes a long time. It might be ages before they're each able to sleep with someone new. Well, not so much, says Harry. He still slept with his date, despite the fact that he had a full-blown panic attack over dinner. Scene 17 Scene 17 Harry and Jess are in some batting cages, practicing their swings. Jess doesn't get it: how can Harry be friends with Sally, who's a woman? He thinks Harry has subconsciously friendzoned himself in order to sabotage his own happiness. The idea being, he should just be with Sally. Harry, on the other hand, is proud of himself. He likes that he can say anything to Sally—he's not trying to impress her. There's no taboo subject between them. Hmm. They actually do sound like friends, don't they? Scene 18 Scene 18 Appropriately, the movie cuts to Harry and Sally having a rather illicit conversation over diner food. Harry's describing how he can sleep with a woman and then ditch her before the morning. For her part, Sally thinks that makes him "a human affront to all women. Harry's all—hey, they're not complaining. And he knows because they… [insert suggestive hand gesture. Sally calls him out—how does Harry know that the women he sleeps with aren't faking their— ahem —pleasure at his performance? Harry swears he would know if they were. Sally's skeptical. But instead of hashing it out, she opts for a demonstration…... fakes an orgasm in a diner full of people. Harry just sort of stares at her: you done yet? Sally grabs a bite of her pie, and the lady at the table next to them says, I'll have what she's having. Scene 19 Scene 19 It's winter. In fact, it's New Years. A newly beardless Harry is scooting Sally around the dance floor. The two are clearly enjoying each other's company. The moment turns a little romantic as the two dance cheek to cheek. Their dance slows. Harry closes his eyes. They head out on the deck as midnight approaches and share a chaste kiss to celebrate the new year. Scene 20 Scene 20 Another day, another old couple. The woman tells the story: the two of them were counselors at neighboring boys' and girls' camps. They met at a camp dance. He introduced himself as "Ben Small, of the Coney Island Smalls. And she says that's when she knew. Who can resist a Coney Island Small? Scene 21 Scene 21 Sally and Marie are hustling down a New York street at night. Marie confesses that she sent herself flowers from a fake "Jonathan" in order to make her married boyfriend jealous, in the hopes that might make him leave his wife. Which he's not going to do. Girl, get over it. As the two chat, we learn that Sally is trying to set up Marie with Harry. Then we cut to Harry and Jess, and we learn that Harry is trying to set up Jess with Sally. Jess is skeptical. Harry has said that Sally has a good personality, which must mean she's "not that attractive. Dude. It's Meg Ryan. At dinner, we see that the two set-ups aren't going that great. An awkward silence ensues. And then something happens. Marie quotes Jess's article—to his face—not realizing that he wrote it. The two hit it off. After the date, Jess and Marie grab a cab together, leaving Harry and Sally alone together on the street. Well, at least the date was a success for two out of the four? Scene 22 Scene 22 Yet another old couple tells their love story. They lived in neighboring villages and had an arranged marriage. They weren't supposed to meet until the wedding day, but the groom wanted to know what she looked like, so he spied on her before the wedding. He liked what he saw, and agreed to marry her. And they've been married for 55 years. Scene 23 Scene 23 Harry and Sally are shopping at The Sharper Image. Apparently, they're buying something for Jess and Marie. It's been four months, so we can assume that Jess and Marie are now an item. Perhaps Harry and Sally are after a housewarming gift—or maybe even an engagement gift? Harry spies a karaoke machine and the two sing an impromptu duet of "Surrey with a Fringe on Top. As Sally takes her solo, Harry freezes. He sees something. And it's not making him happy. It's his ex-wife—and she's coming this way. Plus she's got her new squeeze on her arm: Ira. Yep. It's about as awkward as you'd imagine. Harry swears he's "perfect. and then says he thinks Helen looks like she's retaining water. Good one, Harry. Way to be. Scene 24 Scene 24 A few hours after the disastrous Sharper Image encounter, Harry and Sally arrive at Jess and Marie's place, armed with a plant. They're helping Jess and Marie move into their new apartment. Jess shows them the coffee table he likes—it's a wagon wheel. With a glass top. It's straight-up hideous. But Jess won't back down. As the two argue over furniture, Harry listens on, looking wistfully out the window. He compares them to him and Helen. They started off like this, too. All fun and games and silly fits over coffee tables. But down the line, it will all go to hell in a handbasket. Basically, he tells them that they're headed for a miserable divorce, just like him. He rushes outside. We guess that run-in with Helen really threw him for a loop. Sally marches outside to talk some sense into Harry. She tries to give him some advice, and he snaps at her. He doesn't understand how she never gets upset about Joe. He calls her out for not dating anyone else, and she doesn't see how that would prove she's over Joe. She rants at him a bit, and when she's done, Harry apologizes and the two hug. Out comes Jess with the wagon wheel coffee table. "Don't say a word. Scene 25 Scene 25 The gang's at a party, playing pictionary. Sally furiously draws a baby and the party guests guess literally anything that could have to do with a baby, including a very emphatic "BABY FISH MOUTH. from Jess. Best. Guess. Ever. Sally's date tells her it made perfect sense to him, and the two share a smooch while Harry looks on, perhaps a little jealous. As Sally heads to the kitchen to help Marie with the coffee, she sees Harry smooch his date, too. Do we detect some jealousy on her part as well? Marie and Sally chat in the kitchen, while Harry and Jess chat in the den. Sally thinks Harry's date is too young for him. Harry thinks Sally's date is too tall. Oh, when will these two crazy kids figure it out? Scene 26 Scene 26 Harry's at home reading a book. Sally calls. She's blubbering incoherently. It turns out Joe's getting married. And hoo boy is Sally a mess. She invites Harry in and tells him that Joe called her to let her know that he's tying the knot. So if she's over him, as she claims to be, why's she so upset? Well, it turns out she feels totally rejected. The whole reason she left Joe, after all, was that she wanted marriage—he didn't. But as it turns out, he did. He just didn't want to be married to Sally. Oof. That's gotta sting. Harry comforts her and gives her a hug. Then he kisses her—just a little peck. Then they hug some more. Then he kisses her again—just a little peck. But then Sally kisses Harry. And it's not just a peck. The scene cuts to the two of them in bed together, clearly post-coital. Harry looks like a deer in headlights. Sally looks like a deer on cloud nine. Yikes. She fetches some water from the kitchen, sighing and swooning all the way. When Sally comes back to bed, things are clearly awkward. They go to sleep, and when Sally wakes up, she finds Harry already dressed and headed for the door. They make plans for dinner later, and then he makes like a banana and splits. Pardon Harry's skid marks. Scene 27 Scene 27 Sally calls Marie. Right when Harry calls Jess. Marie and Jess are pumped that Harry and Sally have sealed the deal. They totally belong together. But both Harry and Sally confess that afterwards, things got weird. Jess and Marie are bummed, but understanding. They get off the phone as quickly as possible and snuggle each other gratefully. Scene 28 Scene 28 Harry and Sally go to dinner, both intending to tell the other that sleeping together was a mistake. They agree, but it's awkward, and it's clear something has broken between these two. Then they make like bunnies and… eat salad. Who doesn't love a good salad after a DTR? Scene 29 Scene 29 A few montagey scenes—of Harry and Jess talking and Sally and Marie chatting—tell us that some time has passed. And that means it's time for Jess and Marie's wedding. During the ceremony, there's clearly some tension between Harry and Sally, what with all the awkward eye contact they're making. And then comes the reception. It's ten kinds of terrible. Here's what goes down: Harry walks up to Sally and tries to make small talk. Sally's not having it. She doesn't want to talk. Harry wants to know why they can't get past it. It's been three weeks. Which, according to Sally, is not very long. Sally's frustrated because she thinks Harry is acting like it didn't mean anything. But Harry thinks she's making it mean too much. What's the big deal? They both agreed it was a mistake, right? That's when it all goes south. He says he didn't go over there intending to make love to her, but when she looked up at him with her sad, teary eyes and he just… couldn't help himself. Or something. Ah, so it was pity sex? Yeah, we see Sally's slap coming a mile away, don't we? Scene 30 Scene 30 Harry and Sally spend the holidays alone. Harry keeps calling, apologizing, and trying to get Sally to pick up the phone. No dice. He tries everything: groveling, singing, clever banter. Nothing works. When Sally finally does pick up the phone, he apologizes and asks her out for New Years, seeing as how neither one of them has a date. But Sally says no. She's not his "consolation prize. Scene 31 Scene 31 Cut to New Year's Eve. Harry's home alone, and Sally's at a big shindig, dancing rather lacklusterly with a boring but handsome man. Harry takes a walk, and we hear his internal monologue. He's clearly trying to convince himself he's not miserable without Sally. Sally's equally miserable at the party, and she wants to head home early. Meanwhile, Harry eats sad ice cream and then throws the leftovers into a sad trashcan. Then he sadly puts his sad hands in his sad pockets. He finds himself at the place that he and Sally parted ways when they first got to New York: Washington Square Park. He flashes back on their entire relationship, and we hear their original conversation about how it's impossible for men and women to be friends. Harry has a moment of clarity. He's realized something. Ah, we think we know what. He takes off running. Because this is a romantic comedy. And that's what one does at the end of a romantic comedy. Sally, meanwhile, is leaving the party. Even though it's almost midnight, she just can't take it anymore. As she walks out of the ballroom, Harry bursts in the door. She steels herself, nose up and defiant as Harry walks right up to her and tells her that he loves her. She's not having it. She thinks he's just lonely. Confessing his love doesn't erase everything that's happened. Harrumph and phooey. So Harry channels his inner Cary Grant and delivers the ultimate romantic speech. He names everything he loves about Sally—the fact that she gets cold easily, that she's a persnickety food-orderer, that she gets a crinkle above her nose when she thinks he's crazy, that he can smell her perfume on his clothes, and that she's the last person he wants to talk to when he goes to bed at night. He wants to spend the rest of his life with her. So there. Sally's still mad, but she's also clearly touched. She says she hates him, but we know she means the opposite. The two kiss. Scene 32 Scene 32 We hear a voiceover of the couple sharing their story—just like the old couples have throughout the movie. Now, they're married. They tied the knot three months after they finally got together on New Years. And they had a super delicious cake—chocolate sauce on the side, of course.

Sally is honestly the best. If you notice, she doesn't shake Helen's hand as if she's angry for Harry! That's best friend goals right there. I absolutely love this movie! It has everything a great movie should have: a clever, witty, romantic, touching, and absolutely hilarious script, and fantastic performances. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan make the perfect couple, because they start off as friends but end up in love. Another reason why this movie is so great is because it appeals to both women and men. Everyone should see "When Harry Met Sally" because it's one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen.

So how men choose a wife? If they already want to nail any woman attractive or not.
